Dianxi Xiaoge quickly gained popularity with viewers outside of China for her soothing cooking videos. An interview with the influencer from rural Yunnan will be featured in English for the first time when the series kicks off on 6 February on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Dailymotion and Goldthread2.com, followed by five how-to-cook episodes featuring unique Yunnan dishes for the Lunar New Year – including “er kuai”, a savory rice cake, and a fermented rice dessert soup. Dianxi Xiaoge enjoys a following of nearly four million YouTube followers and has a fanbase of 11 million around the world. Her popularity comes from her easy-to-follow cooking videos that feature unique recipes, as well as snippets that reveal her authentic lifestyle and little-known perspectives of rural China. She prepares dishes that are unique to Yunnan, with an emphasis on cuisine from the Dai minority ethnic group. Armed with her one trusty cleaver, she cooks with relatively simple equipment using wood-fired woks.

Dianxi Xiaoge’s new series follows the successful run of Goldthread’s 3-episode collaboration with Li Ziqi, another Chinese internet celebrity also known for her viral videos about lifestyle and cooking in the Chinese rural countryside.

“Goldthread is for young, globally-curious people who want to discover China’s untold cultural stories,” said Victoria Ho, Executive Producer at Goldthread. “We’re proud of our series that showcases an authentic, lesser-known side of China’s food culture and lifestyle through two internet stars in Dianxi Xiaoge and Li Ziqi. We are delighted to have the opportunity to be the first media outside of China they have chosen to share their unique personal stories and lend their authentic voice to Goldthread’s growing narrative on Chinese culture.”

“This was an exciting opportunity to collaborate with Goldthread and showcase Yunnan’s unique culture and cuisine to a broader audience outside of China,” said Dianxi Xiaoge. “I hope viewers will get to know my hometown better and enjoy the dishes and desserts for China’s most important festival in China. ”

Dianxi Xiaoge was interviewed by Goldthread’s Senior Reporter Clarissa Wei, known for her passion for exploring Chinese cuisine outside of the stereotypical dumplings and lo mein, and love for getting inside the minds of expert chefs and hunting the best bits from China’s food scene. Future of US-China Relations Cast at First-Ever China Conference United States

NEW YORK, 10 December 2019 – Global leaders, government officials and industry experts gathered in New York City today for the South China Morning Post’s inaugural China Conference: United States, analysing the current conflict between the U.S. and China and profiling a vision for future cooperation and competition between the world’s two biggest superpowers.

The event addressed questions about the US-China trade war, its effect on the global economy, the technological race for 5G and AI supremacy and the possibility of coexistence for two competing ideologies. Other thought-provoking discussions included the future of immigration, trade and cultural exchange between the two nations.

The event featured more than 30 well-known speakers, including former Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China Dr Chen Deming who gave a keynote welcome on three perspectives on U.S.-China relations.

“Looking back on the 40 years of diplomatic relations between China and the U.S., our scientific and technological cooperation has become the most dynamic part of bilateral cooperation,” said Dr Chen Deming.

Dr Chen added: “In this relationship, there are both competition and cooperation, but we believe that competition does not necessarily lead to confrontation or conflict.”

More quotes from the event’s panel speakers are available in the factsheet below.

Said SCMP CEO Gary Liu, “As the shifts in geopolitical and economic balance continue to accelerate with the rise of China, we believe that there is an elevated need to understand the world better, with greater nuance and wider perspectives. Today’s event helped offer a deeper understanding by unpacking the complexities between the two nations, and a glimpse on how the world will be defined by these two superpowers in competition or in cooperation.”

Currently, one third of SCMP’s global readers reside in the United States – approximately 10 million monthly active readers – which highlights the growing demand for in-depth news coverage on the world’s second-largest economy.

Quotes from China Conference: United States

1) Naomi Wilson, Senior Director of Policy, Asia, Information Technology Industry Council

“I think decoupling is a very real worry. And while complete decoupling may not be possible, we’re certainly starting to see a modified decoupling through the policies and regulations that have been put forward by both governments. That’s potentially very damaging in the long run.”

2) Victor Gao, Chairman, China Energy Security Institute; Vice President, Center for China and Globalisation

“These two issues – intellectual property rights and forced technology transfer – these need to be addressed in the context of China-US trade relations.”

3) Donald J. Morrissey, Director: Congressional, State, and Local Government Affairs, Huawei Technologies (USA)

“Huawei is naked before the world. Our products have been tested more than any of our competitors by governments around the world.”

4) Dr. Robert D. Atkinson, Founder & President, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation

“I feel bad for Huawei, because if they were an Indonesian company, none of this would be an issue. They basically have the baggage of the Chinese government hanging over them.”

“US internet companies do not get to have business in China. So what is the possible rationale that China has for saying there are unfair practices. They simply are banned in China.”

5) Dr. Katherine Kaup, James B. Duke Professor of Asian Studies and Politics & International Affairs, Furman University

“Our two economies are intertwined and access to ideas and knowledge is crucial. We need to make sure that doesn’t change.”

6) Eric Fish, Author, China’s Millennials: The Want Generation

“Chinese students are trapped in the middle. The US is worried about Chinese influence, China is worried about what students learn abroad.”

7) Wendy Cutler, Former Acting Deputy U.S. Trade Representative; Vice President and Managing Director, Washington, D.C. Office, Asia Society Policy Institute

“My view is there are solid prospects for a conclusion of the Phase 1 deal. Both sides have said that they’re very close. But I can tell you as a trade negotiator, that last mile is always the most difficult.”

8) Kurt Tong, Partner, The Asia Group; Former U.S. Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau

“Beijing sees [the Hong Kong protests] as the West taking away a “hard-earned piece of China.””

9) Danny Russel, Vice President, International Security and Diplomacy, Asia Society Policy Institute

“We want to get out of this dueling mentality. The question is: what is it that we’re aiming for? What is it that we’re trying to achieve? What is it that we really value? It’s not a simple trade off between personal liberties and rights and the ability to prosper and the ability to break out of poverty. That’s a false choice.”

“The tremendous sensitivity of the authorities in Beijing, its absolute position that Hong Kong not merely is under the sovereignty of China but as a core interest, that no one else is entitled to an opinion and that there can only be one interpretation of what’s happening, is very troubling.”

10) Ann Lee, Author of “What the US Can Learn from China” and “Will China’s Economy Collapse?”; Foreign Policy Advisor to Andrew Yang

“Resolving the bilateral standoff requires the US to be honest about what they are willing to give up in a way to share a global stage with China, assuming that China continues to grow at its current pace and whether they’re willing to share power on various multilateral institutions. Otherwise, China will keep building its own multilateral institutions.”

Insights from China Conference GBA illuminate strategic opportunities from world-renowned experts

HONG KONG, 28 August 2019 –  Industry thought leaders, policy-makers and leading members of academia at the China Conference: Greater Bay Area were unanimous in the view that the ambitious project offered undeniable opportunities that Hong Kong must grasp while highlighting the urgency to address the current civil unrest impacting the city.

SCMP LAUNCHES “BEHIND THE TARIFFS” PODCAST SERIES

HONG KONG, 15 July 2019 – The South China Morning Post launched its “Behind the Tariffs” podcast series, which tells the human interest stories of the US-China trade war. The six-part series explains the on-the-ground impact of the tariffs, beyond political rhetoric and abstract dollar figures, featuring voices from countries caught in the crossfire.

The multi-language podcast series profiles business owners and operators across the United States, China and Asia that have been caught up in the trade war. The series was written and produced by Jarrod Watt, SCMP’s Specialist Digital Production Editor, and was presented by SCMP journalists Finbarr Bermingham and Naomi Ng. Other contributors include US-China trade lawyer William Marshall and trade economist David Dodwell.

“Beyond the tweets and beyond the rhetoric are the stories of real people affected by the US-China trade war,” Watt said. “Our series humanises the trade war by detailing the impact of the impasse on industries and people.”

The series also is noteworthy for being the source of several breaking news stories – for example, Ms. Ng’s interview with Hong Kong’s Anna Kam of Sky City was picked up by POLITICO, and Cissy Zhou’s reports from Vietnam led to major stories in SCMP revealing efforts to sidestep tariffs, and how Vietnam is being used as a political tool in China’s Belt and Road aspirations

A bonus podcast episode includes an epilogue analysing the updates since the G20 meetings, as well as revisiting major milestones chronicling the trade war. The podcast also sheds light on the future between the two superpowers following announcements of a trade war truce.

The “Behind the Tariffs” podcast is available on Google podcasts, iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and on Soundcloud.

SCMP’s China Internet Report 2019 showcases new insights and global impact of the Chinese technology industry

HONG KONG, 10 July 2019 — The South China Morning Post today released the 2019 China Internet Report, offering international observers essential insights into China’s fast-moving internet industry and an extensive study on how the internet plays a crucial part of China’s economic future.

The second edition of the China Internet Report delves deeper and broader into China’s drive to be a global leader for innovation, and examines the opportunities and challenges for its technology-led industrial transformation. The annual report includes a comprehensive overview of the country’s top industry players and new entrants.

One of the key highlights of the China Internet Report is the year’s most significant trends, as observed by SCMP’s technology reporters and contributing experts:

  • The Chinese tech industry’s “copycat” reputation has now been reversed, as China’s innovations in super apps, social + ecommerce, and short videos are being mimicked around the world;
  • China is racing ahead with 5G, with hopes to lead in global telecommunications for the very first time (includes a map 5G cities across China, and a timeline comparison between China and other countries in the 5G race);
  • AI development in China is making significant advances – including intelligent consumer applications and smart cities; and
  • Social credit is becoming a reality in China as local governments roll out their own systems ahead of a 2020 deadline.

As the world’s largest market of internet users, China’s sheer scale and impact as an emerging global trendsetter make the China Internet Report a must-read for global business, policy, marketing, and technology decision-makers. The report includes deep dives into eleven key sectors: e-commerce, Content & Media, Social & Messaging, Sharing Economy, 5G, Artificial Intelligence, Smartphones, Smart Devices, Autonomous Cars, Blockchain & Fintech, and Gaming.

The 2019 edition also includes, for the first time, expert commentary and contributions from technology insiders and industry leaders such as Dr. Kai-Fu Lee (CEO, Sinovation Ventures), Dada, (Co-founder, Pinduoduo), Tan Min-liang (CEO, Razer), Eric Xu (Managing Partner, GGV), and many more.

“Technology has been a central piece of the US-China trade war, so understanding what is driving tech in China is essential knowledge in today’s world,” said SCMP’s Technology Editor Chua Kong Ho. “Tech companies from around the world are taking cues from new digital innovations and new tech business models in China driving the fourth industrial revolution – the China Internet Report will be essential reading because of China’s internet industry’s growing global influence.”

“In our second year partnering with SCMP to produce the China Internet Report, we are excited to share new insights with the world to better understand the vibrant dynamic internet landscape in China and its digital innovations that drive the transformation of payments, blockchain, retail, e-commerce and education,” said Edith Yeung, Managing Partner at Proof of Capital and creator of the China Internet Report. “This report will help any reader have a clearer grasp on the technology trends shaping China.”
