SCMP the biggest winner at WAN-IFRA Asian Digital Media Awards

HONG KONG, 31 October 2019 – The South China Morning Post scored 11 awards at the 2019 WAN-IFRA Asian Digital Media Awards yesterday, with ‘China Tech City’ winning three gold awards for digital media and mobile strategies, and sweeping two categories for the “Best Use of Online Video” and ‘Native Advertising and Branded Content’.

‘China Tech City’ is an interactive news platform that profiles China’s technology landscape and provides deep dives such as 5G and major tech players. It won three gold awards in the ‘Best News Website or Mobile Service’, ‘Best in Lifestyle, Sports, Entertainment Website or Mobile Services’ and ‘Best Digital Project to Engage Younger and/or Millennial Audiences’ categories.

SCMP was also recognised for its leadership in online video production and showing excellence for its storytelling abilities, improving reader experience, engagement with the news brand, as well as the technical and aesthetic impact of its video. The award-winning videos are:

    • “Fighting fentanyl – The drug from China destroying American lives” (GOLD)
    • “Homeless in Hong Kong: Life on a footbridge” (SILVER)
    • “I sold my Son to ISIS” (BRONZE) 

The South China Morning Post’s branded content team, Morning Studio, added another feather in its cap by sweeping the ‘Native Advertising and Branded Content’ category.

The gold award winners also would become automatically eligible for WAN-IFRA’s World Digital Media Awards, to complete with the other winners from Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, North America and South Asia in this unique and final international competition. Fifteen judges participated in this year’s Asian Digital Awards from around the world, judging 151 entries submitted from 24 media companies from 11 countries.

The Asian Digital Media Awards 2019, presented by World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), recognise publishers who have adopted digital media and mobile strategies as part of their total product offering to meet the major changes in how people consume news and information.
