Donnie Yen signs as Ambassador for SCMP’s SPIRIT OF HONG KONG AWARDS

HONG KONG, August 23, 2013 – The South China Morning Post are proud to announce today that action superstar, Donnie Yen, is the Ambassador for its Spirit of Hong Kong Awards, launched two weeks ago as a key programme within their extensive Celebrating Hong Kong campaign this year.

SCMP GROUP LTD (SEHK:583) announces interim net profits of HK$105 million and 11% increase in revenue.

HONG KONG – 20 August 2013 – SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK:583) announced today the interim results for 2013. Net profit for the first half of the year was $105.2million, compared with $177.7million for the same period in 2012. Revenue for the first half was $509.1million, 11% higher than last year’s $458.1million.

Earnings per share declined to 6.7cents from 11.4cents for the same period the year prior. Dividend payable per share will be 2.0cents.

The increase in revenue was mainly driven by higher advertising sales from its magazine publishing business and higher rental income from its investment properties, while revenue from its newspaper publishing business for the six months ended 30 June 2013 was down 1% from the previous year, at $365.5million. The economic slowdown saw revenue from Advertising and Marketing Services declining 1% to $221.8million, with a shortfall in advertising sales mitigated by special executions, events and new products. Online display advertising revenue for newspaper division increased 19%.

The results include fair value gains in investment properties of $59.6million compared with $122.1million in 2012. Carving out these gains, net profit fell by 18%, largely due to higher staffing costs. Staff costs rose 26% or $48.4million due to significant investments in additional business interests, including development and deployment of smartphone and tablet services and the July 2012 acquisition of the Elle magazine publishing business in Hong Kong. Costs were also impacted by salary increases, the provision of a bonus and a change in the accounting treatment of the pension fund valuation.

The cover price for the South China Morning Post was increased by $1 to $9 in January, with minimal impact to its circulation. Overall circulation inclusive of digital subscription remains healthy.

The Magazines division generated $124.7million in revenue and the net profit attributable to shareholders was $24.3million, both significantly higher than last year. The growth in revenue and profit was mainly due to the inclusion of Elle’s results. Other women’s titles remain strong. Harper’s Bazaar, in particular, reported a 9% growth in revenue and 8% growth in EBITDA.

Group net cash outflow from investing activities for the period was $38.6million. Capital expenditure for the period amounted to $27.7million, including payments made for the purchase of new printing presses. The Group also made a deposit of $10million for the acquisition of the Hong Kong businesses of AsiaCity Ltd, publisher of HK Magazine, which was completed after the end of the reporting period.

CEO Robin Hu remarked: “Despite weak momentum in the economy and slowdowns in the advertising sector, our businesses remain stable and healthy. We are focused on growing organically as well as diversifying our revenue sources, strengthening our product portfolio and brands and investing in future growth. We’ve added new revenue-generating printing presses, developed a suite of new, brand enhancing print and digital products and a portfolio of events to enhance our reach and revenue. Positive momentum within the company itself is strong and we are well poised to continue upon our growth trajectory.”

SCMP inks deal with Asia City

HONG KONG 23th January 2013 – The 25th Anniversary Operation Santa Claus (OSC) 2012 campaign formally announced its fundraising total during a star-studded closing ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Hotel yesterday; a new all-time high of HK$18.8 million dollars for 18 charities.

OSC, jointly organised the South China Morning Post and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), has now raised an astonishing HK$181 million over 25 years – through the generous support of corporations, organisations, schools and individuals – supporting 176 charities in total.

The ceremony, which was live-broadcasted on RTHK’s Radio 3, was attended by many of Hong Kong’s well known names, from Cardinal Zen, who made an opening address, to Allan Zeman, Sir David Akers Jones, Rosemary Vandenbroucke, Lisa S, Nissa Marion, and Regina Leung, OSC Patron and the wife of Hong Kong Chief executive, Leung Chun-ying.

“This year many donors went to great lengths to make their own fundraising efforts fun for the participants with runs, games, football, squash and a host of other activities,” said Robin Hu, Chief Executive Officer, South China Morning Post.

“I am particularly proud of our own Santa on the Beach fundraising effort at Repulse Bay where a group of celebrities and corporate teams took part in team-building games such as rafting and water-balloon battles, and raised a total of HK$240,000.”

Other innovative fundraising included a Cathay Pacific flash-mob dance at the airport; the police tactical unit – which has supported the campaign for 21 years – with an annual games day; the Santa Hashers fun run; and Discovery Mind Kindergarten’s 7th anniversary, raising $150,000 from their local community walk.

A record 28 major corporate donors donating a minimum of HK$150,000 took part this year. Some 22 schools – 19 of whom were major donors – joined the campaign, raising more than HK$500,000.

Top corporate fundraiser Morgan Stanley hit an all time record of HK$2.5m, UBS raised HK$2.4m and JP Morgan raised HK$1m.

The WingDing Squash tournament, now in its 9th year, raised a record HK$1.8m. A personal donor made his fifth anonymous donation of HK$1m, sending the total funds raised to $1.3m above the record set at last year’s closing ceremony.

The charities covered this year were Children’s Heart Foundation, Hans Andersen Club, Kids4Kids, Playright Children’s Play Association, Teach Unlimited Foundation, Christian Action, Christian Family Service Centre, Operation Dawn,Foodlink Foundation, World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong, Helping Hand,Hong Kong Red Cross Hospital Schools, The Joshua Hellmann Foundation for Orphan Disease, Lions Kidney Educational and Research Foundation, Little Life Warrior Society, Operation Smile – China Medical Mission, The Society for AIDS Care and Families of SMA Charitable Trust.

South China Morning Post scoops top journalism awards for China reporting

HONG KONG, 7 June 2013 – The South China Morning Post picked up a total of 11 editorial awards including four top prizes and seven honourable mentions in this year’s Society of Publishers in Asia Editorial Awards, which were presented at a gala dinner at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on June 6.

An ensemble team from the SCMP won one of SOPA’s most prestigious prizes, the Scoop award, for a groundbreaking series of articles last year on China’s 18th Party Congress leadership transition. Among the articles was an exclusive report on the line-up of the seven men who would form the elite Politburo Standing Committee – a story which was published before the secretive Congress even opened. Another included a scoop on a Ferrari car crash in March last year and the cover-up of a scandal involving then-President Hu Jintao’s top aide Ling Jihua, which led to his political demise.

Two China environmental issue stories penned by reporter Shi Jiangtao inspired the judges to present the award of Excellence, one for the article “Sold down the river” in the Feature Writing category and another for Shi’s two-part series “Toxic”, which probed one of the worst mainland cadmium contamination incidents in decades, which picked up the award in the Reporting on the Environment category.

Simon Scarr’s information graphic on the breakdown of electricity consumption in brightly-lit and air-conditioned Hong Kong won another well deserved award of Excellence. Scarr also won an honourable mention in the same category with “Arteries of the city”.

Further China reports that caught the judges’ eye included one from reporters Denise Tsang and Charlotte So, from the business team. Their three-part series “Dongguan, deserted boom town” secured an honourable mention in the Business Reporting category. Verna Yu and Teddy Ng, both from the national desk, won an honourable mention in the category of Reporting Breaking News with their series “Escape from China”, which covered the daring escape to New York of blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng from 19 months of house arrest in a remote village in eastern China. Fiona Tam also won an honourable mention in the Human Rights Reporting category for “Maimed in China”.

Reporter Lana Lam secured an honourable mention in the same category for her “Libyan rendition” series, and Post Magazine art director Lee Wing-yam won an honourable mention in the category of Magazine Design with “Breaking in”, for a cover story on the mainland blogosphere published in November.

Cartoonist Harry Harrison won an honourable mention with “The Handover”, a stunningly detailed celebration of the 15th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong to Chinese rule in 1997.

The “Celebrating Hong Kong” movement was initiated by the South China Morning Post to mark the paper’s 110th Anniversary, which takes place on 6th November this year. It is a shared celebration of the city, and aims to boost positive energy and constructive dialogue through a series of editorial features, partnership activities, ambassadorial support, topical seminars and more.

An important part of the “Celebrating Hong Kong” initiative is the breadth of support it has garnered from influential individuals and companies. Committed partners include Lane Crawford, MTR, Ecovision, DHL, Agnes b, G2000, Sotheby’s, Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Cathay Pacific, Hang Seng Bank, PwC and many more. Each of the participating partners will implement a programme of their own to support the Celebrating Hong Kong theme.

Influential individuals who have accepted a role as an Ambassador for the initiative include Benjamin Hung, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong, Jay Walder, CEO of MTR, Adrian Cheng, Executive Director of Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Ltd, Olympic cyclist Sarah Lee-Wai Sze, Chairman of Ocean Park, Allan Zeman, Pansy Ho Managing Director of Shun Tak Holdings, Professor Tsui Lap-Chee Vice Chancellor and President University of Hong Kong and the youngest ambassador, Kenny Lau, who is an accomplished child artist, aged 7.

The South China Morning Post have an extensive plan of editorial features scheduled throughout the year, from stories of kindness and acts of humanity, to feats of engineering and other achievements, and features on treasured Hong Kong traditions and destinations.

“The Spirit of Hong Kong Awards celebrates the individuals and groups that represent the very best of our city, but who have not had the attention they deserve. These are those that have set positive examples through their selfless acts, their hard-working contributions to society, and their heartwarming stories of achievement against the odds” said Sir David Akers-Jones, who will chair an esteemed judging panel for the awards.

The Redefining Hong Kong debate series features seminars and conferences hosted by South China Morning Post and industry leaders. The debate series focuses on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for Hong Kong, from its role as a gateway to China, a panel chaired by Benjamin Hung, Standard Chartered’s CEO, to “The construction of a greener, more livable city“, a panel chaired by Paul Zimmerman, District Councillor. A further debate on “Hong Kong’s Path to 2017” will be chaired by the Hon. Ronald Arculli, (former Legislative Council and Executive Council member and former Chairman of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd).

The Celebrating Hong Kong Charity Auction, which will be held early in 2014, will be a culmination of the SCMP’s Celebrating Hong Kong activities. Kevin Ching, CEO of Sotheby’s remarked “Sotheby’s is proud to support this meaningful auction, which will comprise inspiring works from international and local artists and designers around the theme of Celebrating Hong Kong,”

Proceeds from the auction will support the Celebrating Hong Kong charity fund which has selected three highly respected local charities addressing age and poverty issues: Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, St James’ Settlement and the Society for Community Organisation.

Robin Hu remarked. “In celebrating Hong Kong we must also recognise that there are many with much less to celebrate. These people deserve the kindness and charity of others, and we hope this auction will go some way to addressing the imbalance.”

SCMP appoints new business editor

HONG KONG, 16 May 2013 – The South China Morning Post is pleased to announce the appointment of Nick Edwards as the new Business Editor, reporting directly to Wang Xiangwei, Editor-in-Chief.

Nick Edwards will lead a team of more than 30 journalists focus on covering every aspect of business in Hong Kong and China. Edwards’ brief is to break news and provide sharp analysis to give SCMP readers fresh perspective on the most important business stories of the day.

“At a time when China and its economy take an increasingly dominant role on the global stage, reporting and analysing how China ticks is more important than ever,” said SCMP Editor-in-Chief Wang Xiangwei. “Nick, who joins us fresh from Beijing where he was Chief Economics Correspondent for Reuters, will be able to step right in to lead our coverage of the Hong Kong and Chinese economies.”

Edwards has been writing about Asia’s influence on the global economy since 1996 when he joined Reuters in Singapore. He moved to Hong Kong as chief investment correspondent in 1999 and then to London in 2003 to lead coverage of European investment markets. Followed by assignments as treasury news editor for Europe, Middle East and Africa and economics editor for Reuters TV, before he moved to Beijing in 2011.

Nick Edwards: “Most of my career has been Reuters where I have been involved in the biggest stories in global economics. Of course, one of the biggest of those stories has been the impact of China on the rest of the world.”

SCMP to acquire Asia City Media Group’s Hong Kong business

HONG KONG, 3 May 2013 – The SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK: 583) today announced that it is acquiring the Hong Kong business of Asia City Media Group Ltd, including HK Magazine, Where Hong Kong, Where Chinese玩, and The List, as well as a number of mobile and web products.

Completion of the acquisition is scheduled to take place in early July 2013, and will bring into the SCMP Group additional well-established titles to expand its portfolio in Hong Kong. The SCMP Group’s flagship title, South China Morning Post, is the city’s leading English language newspaper and is now celebrating its 110th anniversary.

The move follows SCMP Group’s acquisition last year of the Hong Kong Chinese language edition of Elle from Hearst Corporation, which gave a further boost to the existing market leading portfolio of Chinese language women’s magazines.

Asia City’s dominant title, HK Magazine, has been established in Hong Kong since 1991, and is the leading English language leisure and lifestyle free distribution magazine in the city. The List is an English language free distribution pocket sized city guide and directory. Where Hong Kong and Where Chinese 玩 are handy tourist information guides. Other products in the Asia City portfolio include the HK Magazine website, The List website, HK Magazine Tablet app and the Happy Hour Finder app.

SCMP Group advised that the Hong Kong business of Asia City will continue to manage its titles and businesses independently, with the added benefit of larger group operational expertise, synergies and resources. A board of directors comprising a number of SCMP Group senior executives has been appointed to support and oversee the overall business direction.
