SCMP GROUP REIMAGINES DESTINATION MACAU & DM EXCLUSIVE

Hong Kong, 12 September 2014 –

SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK: 583), Asia’s leading media holding company, today announced the revamp of Destination Macau and its sister publication DM Exclusive, two luxury Macau-focused lifestyle magazine titles acquired by the Group recently. Published in English and Simplified Chinese, the two titles will refocus content to bring editorial flair and advertising opportunities in Macau to a new level, in step with the city’s growing tourism- and retail-led economy. The first revamped Destination Macau will meet readers today while DM Exclusive will be published later this month.

Under the aegis of the SCMP Specialist Publications division, Destination Macau and DM Exclusive are independent from the hospitality / gaming brands in Macau, and hence are uniquely positioned to connect readers with all of Macau’s best in life. A team of SCMP specialist journalists is dedicated to curate the content and identify the latest international trends in all aspects of luxury lifestyle. Target readers include affluent, modern and discerning luxurists who actively seek leisure, gourmet cuisines, world-class entertainments and ritzy lifestyle in Macau.

Editorially, the content of both magazines has undergone an overhaul. Destination Macau informs and inspires with striking photographs, interviews with local and international tastemakers; and offers a fresh and insightful look at trends, people and places defining the worlds of culture, entertainment, fashion and food. DM Exclusive, distributed exclusively in VIP-only premises in Macau, is the only magazine that caters for the city’s ultra-high net-worth individuals looking for unique items and one-of-a-kind experiences.

Mr. Romanus Ng, General Manager, SCMP Advertising and Marketing Solutions, said, “With crème de la crème readership and a wide distribution network, Destination Macau and DM Exclusive are well positioned to strengthen marketers’ reach to top-tier clientele. These advantages will lend us credence in growing the SCMP Group’s media space market share in Southern China. In addition, the two revamped titles will be our strong pathfinders to geographically expand from our Hong Kong base to one of the world’s fastest growing luxury retail market.”

Ms. Winnie Chung, Editorial Director, SCMP Specialist Publications, said, “We’re proud to present the revamped Destination Macau and DM Exclusive to the titles’ loyal readers. From font type, photographs, graphics to story content and language, our Specialist team has worked hard in keeping intact the essence of the magazines while leading the titles to the next level to capture the hearts and minds of generations of readers to come. Macau, being Southern China’s hottest place for highlife entertainment and leisure, will never stop inspiring us with interesting topics and trends, helping us to grow the magazines with our readers.”

In the Sep/Oct issue, Destination Macau’s unique content includes exclusive interviews with Lisboa Hotel and Grand Lisboa’s French chef Joel Robuchon, who has bagged more Michelin stars than anyone else on earth and revolutionized dining in Macau; and world-renowned Zou Shiming, China’s most accomplished boxer of all time and the current WBO International Flyweight champion who will share his thoughts on his favourite things to see and do in Macau. The issue will also put the limelight on five of the hottest private kitchens in Macau that are cooking up a storm with Macanese and European cuisines.

Organised by the SCMP Group with patron sponsorship from Chow Tai Fook Jewellery and New World Development, the SCMP Charity Art Auction raised over HK$2.76 million from 16 fine art pieces and collectibles donated by established galleries, art collectors and artists from Australia, China, England, Hong Kong and India. Acclaimed artists include Zeng Fanzhi, Simon Birch, Sohan Qadri and Wilson Shieh. toast for the success of the SCMP Charity Art Auction.

Dr. David Pang, Chairman of the SCMP Group, remarked, “As Hong Kong’s longest running community newspaper of record, it has always been our mission to give the underprivileged a voice, and to support them by fulfilling our social obligation in the role of convener, by bringing together resources and those with influence to help improve the lives of the needy. Through the inspirational power of art, we hope to kindle the spirit of charity to help raise much-needed funds to kick-start four new and impactful programmes run by our designated charities. The funds we raised today will go the distance towards helping both children and the elderly that need your help.”

The SCMP Charity Art Auction is an integral part of the “Celebrating Hong Kong” campaign which began last year to mark the 110th anniversary of the South China Morning Post. The auction proceeds will empower the disenfranchised through the following programmes:

  • Soup Kitchen by St. James’ Settlement: To be set up at the Kowloon Kindness Centre, the programme will provide free soup for six weeks to people who are unable to cope with basic daily meal expenditures. Proceeds will be used to buy nutritious soup ingredients and the soup will be brewed without MSG.

  • The Children’s Support Programme by St. James’ Settlement: It will provide holistic after-school support to deprived children and their families in the Sham Shui Po and Yau Tsim Mong districts through a variety of assistance and services, such as providing breakfast to supplement children’s nutritional needs, after-school support to underprivileged children, building up positive parent-child relationships and encouraging parents to foster a better atmosphere in which the children can develop.

  • Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals: It provides assessments and interventions of physiotherapy or occupational therapy for deprived elders primarily to alleviate muscle and joint pain. Roadshows and talks will be held to promote musculoskeletal system care and home safety. Beneficiaries will include elderly singletons, aged couples, Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients and low-income elders in Wah Fu Estate and Wah Kwai Estate.

  • The Home Modification Project by The Society for Community Organization (SoCO): This project aims to improve the living conditions of underprivileged families dwelling in dismal conditions, with a blueprint to create a more conducive learning environment in their homes. A professional steering committee will oversee design, effective installation of furniture, lighting as well as proper ventilation to create a better living environment.

Throughout SCMP’s 111 years of history, it has collaborated with and launched a number of community campaigns and events that pulled together society support to improve the lives of the disenfranchised, including Operation Santa Claus, a partnership between SCMP and RTHK, which has raised over HK$211 million for 190 charitable projects in the past 26 years.

SCMP GROUP LAUNCHES ESQUIREHK.COM First and Only International Men’s Fashion & Lifestyle Media Brand to Kick-start Multimedia Website in HK

HONG KONG, 26 August 2014 –

SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK: 583), Asia’s leading media holding company, today announced that it will launch EsquireHK.com on 1 September, establishing Esquire as the first and only international men’s fashion & lifestyle media brand with a localized multimedia online presence in Hong Kong. This follows the publication of Esquire’s Chinese version in January after SCMP Hearst Magazines Limited, a joint venture between SCMP Group and Hearst Magazines International, acquired its publication rights in Hong Kong.
groupsite_esquire
Leveraging the resonance of the print edition’s lifestyle and fashion content, EsquireHK.com will enrich readers’ experience with a host of multimedia daily-refreshed channels on Style, Lifestyle, Watches, Food & Drinks, Machines, People and Esquire TV. The new website shares the signature brand essence and motif of its US counterpart esquire.com, while infusing Hong Kong and international editorial directions with local flair. EsquireHK.com is powered by multi-talented online editorial specialists that create daily lifestyle & fashion news, reviews, tips, how-to guides and interviews using lively language, videos, photos, infographics and images.

Ms. Josephine Chan, Managing Director, SCMP Magazines Publishing Ltd said, “Through research and focus groups, we confirmed our belief that there is a dearth of men’s fashion and lifestyle websites with quality and original content in sync with what Hong Kong readers are looking for. EsquireHK.com helps us bridge this important market void, while strengthening our connection with readers, and importantly, building on the success that Esquire print has attained since the January launch.”

Ms. Chan added, “With daily updated content, EsquireHK.com will become indispensable to marketers and advertisers looking for an integrated men-focused advertising and promotion platform. In Esquire magazine and EsquireHK.com, they will be able to direct their promotional efforts to a high-value group of target audience that cares about style and substance.”

An online campaign titled “Are you THE MAN?” has preempted the website launch and introduced readers to Esquire HK’s brand essence – modern, sophisticated, confident and detailed. Created by the EsquireHK.com team, the campaign is making a splash with visitors, some of whom heard about it from Esquire’s HK Facebook page. The campaign challenges site visitors to test their understanding of “Lifestyle, Style, Workplace and Party”. Registered participants who submit outstanding answers will win special prizes. The campaign www.esquireHK.com/areyoutheman will end on September 7.

SCMP GROUP LTD (SEHK:583) Announces 17% Increase in Interim Revenue of HK$597.9 million

HONG KONG, 21 August 2014 –

SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK: 583) announced today the interim results for 2014.  Interim revenue was $597.9 million, growing by 17% when compared with $509.1 million for the same period in 2013.  Net profit for the first half of the year was $48.2 million, compared with $105.2 million in 2013, which included fair value gains on investment properties of $59.6 million.  For the six months to 30 June 2014, the Group did not record any gain or loss on its investment properties.  Net profit from normal operations grew 6% in the first half of 2014.

The Board of Directors resolved to declare the payment of an interim dividend payable of 2.20 cents per ordinary share.

The Group’s revenue increase is driven by both our core business and the growth thrust strategy implemented by Management to focus on high growth areas of diversification including outdoor media business, events and conferences business, education business and magazines, which includes new titles such as
HK Magazine, Esquire and ELLE Men.  Adjusted operating profit this period increased by 22% to $70.3 million, compared to $57.5 million for 2013.

The Newspaper division recorded an 11% increase in revenue or $406.1 million compared to $365.5 million from 2013.  Net profit attributable to shareholders was $15.7 million in the first half of 2014, compared to $5.6 million in same period last year.  Advertising and marketing solutions contributed an increase in revenue during the same comparative period, driven by an increase in IPO advertisements, and large-scale events and projects from the marketing solutions side.  The recruitment and education business was stable, and while print recruitment advertisements in Classified Post faced a challenging environment due to an overall trend of jobs moving online, the decline in print revenue was compensated by an increase in online recruitment ads, and incremental revenue from Education Post.  Adjusted EBITDA during this period was $36.1 million, growing 54% against the same period last year of $23.5 million.

Circulation of the
South China Morning Post and Sunday Morning Post saw a slight decline, but this was offset by our growth in digital subscriptions revenue.  Compared to 2013, the first half of 2014 saw total circulation revenue increase through digital subscription growth and other growth thrust strategies.

The Magazines division had a strong first half in 2014, with total revenue increasing 27% to $158.1 million, and net profit attributable to shareholders increasing by 7% to $26.1 million.  The growth in profit was mainly driven by print and online advertising revenue from Cosmopolitan and ELLE.  During this period, the addition of Esquire and The PEAK helped to strengthen the business’ market leader position.  Adjusted EBIDTA during the first half increase 14% to $50.8 million compared to $44.5 million during the same period in 2013.

SCMP Group CEO Mr. Robin Hu noted, “Entering the second half, we hold a cautious forward-looking view as luxury spending remains restrained, and the overall retail market is less buoyant than last year.  By systematically investing in organic and inorganic growth thrusts in the past two years, the Group has been able to withstand economic uncertainty while broadening revenue streams.”

“Consistent with our practice, we will continue to actively manage costs while casting an eye on continued growth and development on strategic opportunities in the traditional and new media space to complement our assets, and to maintain our continued growth path”.

SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST PUBLISHES “CHINA’S WWI” Multimedia Longform Series Showcasing Forgotten Story of First World War Chinese Labourers

HONG KONG, 6 August 2014 –

A century ago, Western civilization was imperiled. Throughout Europe, the first world war raged on as the Allied powers orchestrated a concerted effort against continental destruction. Almost unnoticeably, hundreds of thousands of Chinese labourers were transported to the European war zones, helping to shape Europe during the Great War.

SCMP Group Ltd, Asia’s leading media holding company, brings to light the forgotten but inspiring story, titled China’s WWI, in a special six-part multimedia longform series, shedding light on these migrants of fortune that toiled through devastation.

Full access:
http://multimedia.scmp.com/ww1-china/ (English)
http://www.nanzaozhinan.com/media/ww1/sc/ (Chinese)

Launched to mark the first world war centenary, the special report traces these Chinese labourers’ story, the largest non-European labour contingent in the war, from rural Shandong to the European war trenches and back through archive photos, eyewitness accounts, maps and news articles published in the South China Morning Post at the time, when the paper was only a decade old.

“Chinese people directly helped save Western civilisation when the Western powers were determined to kill each other with anything at their disposal.” Xu Guoqi, historian, The University of Hong Kong

The first English and Chinese multimedia longform series created by an Asian media outlet, the China’s WWI series showcases rare photos unearthed from archives on three continents and thus far unpublished accounts of descendants of these labour corps.

“Nearly 90 years after his death, Shandong farmer Bi Cuide’s descendants flew to France to visit his grave. The family poured Shandong liquor on the grass and left red dates from home. “We were the first in our family to finally pay our respects to him,” says a descendant of Bi’s.”

The China’s WWI special report follows the preceding five multimedia packages:

SCMP ACQUIRES TOP LUXURY LIFESTYLE PUBLISHER – DESTINATION MACAU LIMITED Expands into Macau to Capture High Net-worth Readers in the Region

HONG KONG, 24 March, 2014 – SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK: 583), Asia’s leading media holding company, announced today that it will acquire leading luxury lifestyle publisher Destination Macau Limited from Ignite Media Group Limited to further consolidate its market share in the South China region’s luxury lifestyle media space.

groupsite_3-24-2014 10-52-50 AM
As the world’s number one gaming market, Macau surpassed Las Vegas’ total gaming revenue in 2013 by seven times, and is tipped to continue its accelerating pace of growth.  This is underpinned by its status as a tourism hub for China’s rapidly expanding middle class, whose consumption demand has prompted a doubling of Macau’s hotel rooms in the next 5 years.  Moreover, as demonstrated by its more than US$8 billion worth of retail sales in 2013, the opportunity is extremely attractive.

Destination Macau Limited publishes two titles – luxury lifestyle title Destination Macau and ultra high-end magazine DM Exclusive in English and Simplified Chinese, with both delivering high quality leisure lifestyle content, featuring topics such as luxury brands to watch out for, world-class Macau entertainment reviews, and fine-dining experiences to be had.  Moreover, Destination Macau Limited also operates a growing custom publishing business to cater to the content marketing needs of luxury brands, services and retailers aiming to capture the rapidly growing population of Macau-bound jetsetters traveling from China and the world.

This strategic addition to SCMP Group’s ever-growing portfolio of magazines, which already boasts Cosmopolitan, Elle, Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, PEAK and STYLE, further reinforces its dominant position in the luxury lifestyle segment.  Importantly, it gives SCMP Group the key to enter Macau – China’s entertainment tourism capital, and the world’s fastest growing gaming market.

“The combination of Destination Macau’s high quality content, and its native base of affluent readers from Macau, China and the world makes this acquisition a perfect fit into the SCMP Group’s family of luxury titles, and adds to an even more formidable offering to our network of top tier advertisers”, said Ms. Elsie Cheung, Chief Operating Officer of SCMP Group.

Moreover, “with Destination Macau’s strong brand equity and established market presence in Macau, it presents a fertile opportunity for further growth when coupled with our award-winning expertise in multimedia magazine publishing, advertising, bespoke events and custom publishing”, continued Ms. Cheung.

“Advertisers today, especially the sophisticated top-tier brands that we regularly work with, are increasingly searching for cross-platform opportunities that allow them to communicate to their target audience along more touch points.  With the SCMP Group, we are confident Destination Macau Limited has found the perfect home”, remarked Ms. Carrie Leung, General Manager of Ignite Media Group.

“Ignite has built Destination Macau and Destination Macau Exclusive into Macau’s premier luxury publishing titles; and knowing SCMP Group’s capabilities, we are confident they will be able to take this business to the next level”. “We look forward to further collaboration and partnerships as Ignite accelerates its market-leading platforms – Macau.com, Qoos.com, MacauHR and Aomen.TV, together with our portfolio of services to continue supporting the growth and diversification of the new Macau”, concluded Ms. Leung.

Destination Macau Limited will operate under SCMP Group’s management from late March onwards, and Destination Macau will maintain its popular editorial direction, and its distribution network within 5-star hotels and resorts, airlines, dedicated direct-to-Macau ferries, and most importantly, its direct distribution to high net-worth individuals in Macau.

Group revenues rose by 12% to $1,146.6 million from $1,019.6 million in 2012.  This was driven by a combination of new and existing revenue sources, including ELLE and higher revenue from advertising and marketing solutions, the contract printing business, investment properties and the newly acquired HK Magazine business.

Profit attributable to shareholders, however, declined 29% from $316.3 million to $223.7 million, mainly due to the decline in revaluation gain on our portfolio of investment properties, increase in staff expenses to support revenue growth and the further development of growth businesses including HK Magazine and EducationPost.com.

The newspaper publishing division remains a key revenue driver for the Group, with an increase in revenue by 5% to $814.1 million. Advertising and marketing solutions led this growth with new advertising formats, as well as an increase in IPO related media bookings. Circulation-related revenue rose by 6% attributable to an increase in South China Morning Post‘s cover price and higher online subscription figures. The contract printing business also recorded 43% growth in revenue in 2013. Part of this growth, however, was offset by the inactive job recruitment market across all sectors.

Another area of growth within the Group is the magazines publishing division which recorded an increase in revenue of 27% to $278.7 million, and a net profit attributable to shareholders of $48.9 million, both higher than last year, due to notable revenue contribution from ELLEHarper’s Bazaar, and increased revenue from Cosmopolitan‘s website.

Excluding fair value gains on investment properties of $170.7 million for 2012 and $87.2 million for 2013, net profit from normal operations decreased by 6% from $145.6 million to $136.5 million.  This is mainly attributed to proceeds used to fund the development of new green shoot ventures.

Earnings per share for 2013 was 14.3 cents, reflecting a 29% decline from 20.3 cents in 2012.  Final dividend payable per share was 4.2 cents.

Dr. David Pang, Chairman of SCMP Group, commented, “as the economy begins to show indications of improvement, we remain cautiously optimistic of the Group’s ability to maintain its growth trajectory.  While the media industry at-large has been impacted by new digital media platforms, a slow IPO market, and an inactive job market; we have steadfastly built a portfolio of new revenue drivers including magazine titles such as ELLEEsquire, HK Magazine, and The Peak, as well as diversifying our business offering to include events and conferences, and more outdoor media advertising inventory.  With these strategic building blocks in place, coupled with a strong pipeline of products, services and talent to expand our outreach to a global digital market, we remain positive in our ability to deliver value and performance in line with the Hong Kong economy in the coming year”.

The Awards, first established by South China Morning Post in 1974, ran for 32 years until 2006, and were recently relaunched as part of their Celebrating Hong Kong initiative. Six categories, namely Grand Prize, Community Contributor, Sportsperson, Performing Artist, Visual Artist and three Linguist awards for English, Cantonese and Putonghua made up the new awards, which were made eligible for nomination from Form 4-6 or Year 10-12 secondary students across Hong Kong.

The audience was treated to performances from the Performing Artist students, including a Latin ballroom dancer, a concert pianist and a Chinese opera singer. Impressive recitals were also given from the linguists, and a visual art exhibition was on display from the Visual Arts category.

Mrs Tse remarked in her speech “I would like to applaud the SCMP. I’m sure in twenty years’ time, most of the illustrious persons of Hong Kong will be either your alumni or people who got the award…long live the awards.” Members of the advisory board Allan Zeman, Chairman of LKF Group and Ocean Park Corporation, Jay Walder, CEO of MTR Corporation, Paul Zimmerman, CEO, Designing Hong Kong, Robin Hu, CEO SCMP Group Ltd, and Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges also attended and shared their thoughts and advice.

“The entry level for the awards is incredibly tough and demands that only the best can even qualify as a nominee. Every single student that entered should be proud that they were the category best in their school” remarked Mr. Hu.

Most of the 23 judges for the awards also joined in honouring the students at the ceremony, which was hosted before all the finalists and shortlisted candidates, their educators and parents. Each category was judged by an expert panel leader, a past winner alumni, and an expert editorial representative from the South China Morning Post. The process took six months of intensive preparation, culminating in nearly 500 nominations, and producing 24 finalists, each carefully screened with face-to-face group and individual interviews.

“At the Jockey Club, education is always a major focus of our community donations and we were delighted to support the SCMP when they relaunched the Student of the Year Awards.” remarked Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, CEO of The Hong Kong Jockey Club. “We have enjoyed our close partnership and together with the tremendous support of our many judges, we are able to contribute to the betterment of Hong Kong by recognising and promoting the necessary qualities in our future generation.”

The South China Morning Post plans to continue the Awards in the long term. “The awards were made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the perfect partner for the awards given their deep support of education” remarked Susan Ramsay, editor of Young Post, the newspaper’s school-distributed student edition. “
