An auspicious 25th Anniversary for Operation Santa Claus – with a record HK$18.8 million raised for 18 charities

HONG KONG 23th January 2013 – The 25th Anniversary Operation Santa Claus (OSC) 2012 campaign formally announced its fundraising total during a star-studded closing ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Hotel yesterday; a new all-time high of HK$18.8 million dollars for 18 charities.

OSC, jointly organised the South China Morning Post and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), has now raised an astonishing HK$181 million over 25 years – through the generous support of corporations, organisations, schools and individuals – supporting 176 charities in total.

The ceremony, which was live-broadcasted on RTHK’s Radio 3, was attended by many of Hong Kong’s well known names, from Cardinal Zen, who made an opening address, to Allan Zeman, Sir David Akers Jones, Rosemary Vandenbroucke, Lisa S, Nissa Marion, and Regina Leung, OSC Patron and the wife of Hong Kong Chief executive, Leung Chun-ying.

“This year many donors went to great lengths to make their own fundraising efforts fun for the participants with runs, games, football, squash and a host of other activities,” said Robin Hu, Chief Executive Officer, South China Morning Post.

“I am particularly proud of our own Santa on the Beach fundraising effort at Repulse Bay where a group of celebrities and corporate teams took part in team-building games such as rafting and water-balloon battles, and raised a total of HK$240,000.”

Other innovative fundraising included a Cathay Pacific flash-mob dance at the airport; the police tactical unit – which has supported the campaign for 21 years – with an annual games day; the Santa Hashers fun run; and Discovery Mind Kindergarten’s 7th anniversary, raising $150,000 from their local community walk.

A record 28 major corporate donors donating a minimum of HK$150,000 took part this year. Some 22 schools – 19 of whom were major donors – joined the campaign, raising more than HK$500,000.

Top corporate fundraiser Morgan Stanley hit an all time record of HK$2.5m, UBS raised HK$2.4m and JP Morgan raised HK$1m.

The WingDing Squash tournament, now in its 9th year, raised a record HK$1.8m. A personal donor made his fifth anonymous donation of HK$1m, sending the total funds raised to $1.3m above the record set at last year’s closing ceremony.

HOW THE UMBRELLA MOVEMENT UNFOLDED

HONG KONG, 29 October 2014 –

Hong Kong has rarely been this disrupted, if not divided. No doubt Hong Kong has seen its share of wartime occupation, force majeure, shocking crimes and riots. But the Umbrella Movement, originally known as Occupy Central, is something different altogether. Sparked by seemingly irresolvable political differences and fueled by societal discontent, the Umbrella Movement caught the world’s attention with arresting images and put Hong Kong on the geopolitical world map like never before.

South China Morning Post, the flagship publication of the SCMP Group and the most awarded newspaper in Hong Kong, today announced the launch of an ebook titled How The Umbrella Movement Unfolded – Part 1, a prequel that begins from 16 January 2013, the day that the civil disobedience movement was given a name (Occupy Central) and a voice (Mr. Benny Tai Yiu-ting), and leading up to the fateful evening of 28 September, the night the movement took over one of the world’s busiest financial districts, and when the first canister of tear gas was fired.

groupsite_ebook_part1-1

In How The Umbrella Movement Unfolded – Part 1, readers will be guided through a journey narrated by the South China Morning Post to learn about not just the build-up to the events that captured the world’s attention, but also read profiles about the principal players involved in the movement, and insights into the thoughts of citizens from different sides of the issue. This 40-page ebook, the first installment of a two-book series, is presented in a timeline format that chronicles the unfolding of an important chapter in Hong Kong’s history. In true eBook format, readers will also be able to enjoy multimedia content, as long as the reader’s device is connected to the Internet.

Part 2, available for download next week, will unfold with an on-the-ground account of the daily struggles of supporters from both camps and the police, and will show in vivid colour and multimedia, how the movement grew from paralyzing a single district, to multiple districts in Hong Kong.

SCMP has been ceaselessly reporting on the Umbrella Movement, and presenting opinions and commentaries for and against the movement. Coverage garnered encouraging popularity as demonstrated by increased online traffic to scmp.com. Unique users of scmp.com during the three weeks since the start of Occupy Central (28 September – 17 October) increased by more than 45% compared to the preceding three weeks, with pageviews spiking well over 110% compared to the two timeframes.

Further recognition came from international media. SCMP’s Occupy Central / Umbrella Movement coverage was cited and referenced by a spate of international media including Financial Times, Washington Post, New York Times, The Guardian, Huffington Post, Time Magazine, Bloomberg, Reuters, AFP, CNBC and BBC.

How The Umbrella Movement Unfolded – Part 1 can be downloaded from scmp.com/ebook. First-time registered users will have free access to the download as well as eight SCMP online stories. Download is also free of charge for existing online subscribers.

“WOMEN OF OUR TIME” CONFERENCE REVEALS SURVEY FINDINGS ON HK WOMEN CAREERISM

HONG KONG, 29 October 2014 –

At the second Women of Our Time Conference yesterday, organised by SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK: 583), the leading media holding company in Asia revealed findings of an exclusive survey conducted in partnership with Acorn Marketing and Research Consultants (International).

Key findings include:

· There is a dissonance between the perception and reality of gender equality in the workplace.

· Gender inequality is a structural issue when it comes to careerism.

· Female and male business leaders place different significance to success at work and at home.

The survey polled over 500 professionals, managers, executives and business respondents of various industries in an online questionnaire conducted in September. The two genders were equally represented in the respondent pool.

Key findings illustrate that there is a dissonance in the perception and reality regarding workplace gender equality. 74% believe that there is gender equality at work in most companies in Hong Kong. However, 39% of female respondents feel that “males are more likely to be promoted” rather than females. The survey further reveals that gender inequality is inherent in the workplace as only 49% of the polled postgraduate female managers are salaried at HK$40,000 or more per month, compared to 60% of their male counterparts. The median salary of males at managerial grade is HK$32,500 and that of females is HK$22,500.

Furthermore, 80% of female respondents prefer to work with male bosses. They perceive male bosses as more rational (56%), have better emotional management (46%) and leadership (40%). On the other hand, among all the respondents who prefer female bosses, female bosses are perceived to be easier to work with because they are more detail-minded (50%), more considerate (50%) and more likely to build rapport (47%).

Women and men also define career success differently. While 63% of male respondents work hard to be leaders, 56% of female respondents strive for the same thing. 47% of the female respondents are concerned over the time and sacrifices they have to make to be business leaders. 32% of female respondents believe they spend more time on family and household responsibilities than their spouse while 45% of males concede to this belief.

The survey findings were revealed at the second Women of Our Time Conference yesterday. The conference and survey are part of SCMP’s initiative to champion diversity and inclusion issues. This initiative first took the form of the Women of Our Time magazine, first launched in 2011 by SCMP. The yearly publication details and celebrates inspiring and touching stories of outstanding women leaders. Celebrated interviewees included Dr. Margaret Chan, World Health Organisation Director-General; Vivienne Tam, fashion designer; and Ms. Anita Fung, Chief Executive Officer, HSBC Limited.

Speaking at the opening of the conference, Ms. Elsie Cheung, Chief Operating Officer of the SCMP Group, shared her thoughts on Hong Kong female leadership. “Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city with some of the world’s brightest minds behind it. We have a lot of female leaders and visionaries in the business world, academia, arts, politics and sports. But yet, women were far from being men’s equals in many areas.” She added that SCMP has been contributing to the dialogue to champion gender equality in Hong Kong’s workplace through SCMP coverage, the Women of Our Time Conference and the Women of Our Time Magazine.

The Women of Our Time Conference yesterday featured a number of speakers, moderators and panelists including Dr. York Chow, Equal Opportunities Commission Chairperson; the Hon. Mrs Regina Ip, Member of Executive and Legislative Councils and Chair of New People’s Party; Dr. Raymond Ch’ien, Chairman, MTR Corporation and Hang Seng Bank; Ms. Carol Liao, Managing Director, Greater China, Senior Partner Director, The Boston Consulting Group; Ms. Stella Lau, Women’s Commission Chairperson; and Professor Fanny M. Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Psychology and Director, Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Within 72 hours of the Sichuan earthquake in 2008, orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Poon Tak-lun had already flown into Chengdu and went with a team to Wenchuan to help hundreds of injured people over the next five days. There were many further visits over the following five years as Poon assisted the Hong Kong Red Cross and its local partners in Sichuan in creating a rehabilitation centre, which subsequently served more than 1800 people. Poon helped with training of medical staff and used most of his weekends and holidays to be in Sichuan. Poon has been nominated by the Hong Kong Red Cross.

Mr. David Bellis – Heritage Preservation Award
Briton David Bellis has lived in Hong Kong since 1992. He enjoys wandering around the streets and countryside of Hong Kong and making discoveries of former air raid tunnels, obelisks, fire hydrants, odd iron rings, boundary markers and other items. So eight years ago he started a blog with a few articles about what he had come across, which became the local history website gwulo.com, now a sophisticated website involving hundreds of hours of programming work by Bellis of more than 17,000 pages of heritage information. This includes thousands of old photos, sources for people looking up their ancestors to look through, and prisoner of war diaries. Bellis has been nominated by Designing Hong Kong.

Mr. Li Kam-keung – Self-sacrifice to Achieve Greater Good Award
Li Kam-keung is Hong Kong’s longest serving blood donor, having started donating blood at the age of 18 and in order to give blood on average every two weeks, he needs to be in peak condition. As of June 2014, Li, a former traffic police officer, had given 549 blood donations, the highest number made by a donor in the records for the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service. According to Li’s nominator, Hong Kong Red Cross, his donations have benefited hundreds of patients. The organisation says Li should be recognised as a role model who inspires the younger generation.

Mr. Nelson Yip Siu-hong – Lion Rock Entrepreneur Award
Until the age of 16, Nelson Yip Siu-hong would spend a lot of time at home in the care of his family. With mild cerebral palsy, Yip uses crutches to get about, but at 16 decided to become more independent. Yip’s story is an inspirational one. He runs three companies, is very active in sports and has not allowed his disability to hold him back. In 1995, Yip founded Hong Kong Rehabilitation Power to assist those with disabilities. Having enjoyed horse riding, Yip was chosen for the Paralympic team in 2008 and also carried an Olympic torch.

Mr. Michael Tsui Kam-fai – Innovation for Good Award
It’s the stuff of Hollywood. A robotic hand, but with a serious rehabilitation mission. As CEO of Rehab-Robotics, Tsui created the “Hand of Hope Robotic System” in partnership with Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The system can be used by stroke survivors to aid motor recovery. By actively engaging patients in repetitive tasks, the brain is able to rewire neurological pathways – so the technology helps the stroke survivor to re-educate his or her muscles. The portable hand brace is strapped on to the human hand and rewards the patient with the desired motion as he or she activates the muscles with messages from the brain.

Mr. Leung Siu-lun – Overcoming Personal Challenge Award
Within one month five years ago Leung Siu-lun went from being a top student and very capable swimmer and sportsman, to life in a wheelchair paralysed from the waist down. His condition is known as spinal arteriovenous malformation or spinal AVM, a rare, abnormal tangle of the blood vessels on, or near, the spinal cord. But this term he’ll be starting a degree in medical laboratory science at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has also become a champion fencer. Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union has nominated Leung as members were impressed by how Leung has managed to overcome the difficulties of his illness, and instead moved on to new endeavours.

Law Wing Kee Construction & Decoration Ltd. – Corporate Citizen Award
Peter Lo left school at 14 because his father couldn’t afford to keep him in school. Instead he went to work for his father’s construction and decorating firm Law Wing Kee. He struck up a friendship with a priest, who then employed both Lo and his father to decorate his school. Lo needed more workers so he recruited unemployed young men from a local playground who were prime pickings for the triads. Lo continued this policy and later would also pay for the evening education of some of his employees. Lo these days still follows that ethos, employing former prisoners from Stanley and training them in a skill and giving them a new start in life.

Ms. Sheila Purves – People’s Choice Award (public voting)
After she moved to Hong Kong from Canada more than 30 years ago, Sheila Purves worked as a physiotherapist and occupational therapist in the rehabilitation sector in Hong Kong. But over the past two decades much of her stellar work has been carried out on the mainland where she has overcome linguistic and cultural hurdles to teach numerous students of rehabilitation professions. With her positive outlook, Purves was able to overcome barriers and gain the trust of local counterparts. Purves has devoted her career to supporting rehabilitation services on the mainland and has been nominated by the Hong Kong Red Cross.

SCMP LAUNCHES BRAND POST Sponsored Content that Adds Voice to Brand Story-telling

HONG KONG, 16 September 2014 –

SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK: 583), Asia’s leading media holding company, announced that it has launched SCMP Brand Post, a dedicated advertising-driven content offering available on all SCMP’s English and Chinese digital platforms. Leveraging SCMP’s wide reach to affluent and influential readers, SCMP Brand Post provides a much sought-after channel for marketers and brands to deepen connection with their target audience.

Launched recently, SCMP Brand Post has worked with HKT Premier, The Venetian Macau and Henderson Land Development to create sponsored content relevant to the lifestyles of their respective clientele communities. HKT Premier’s Brand Post, titled “Premier Living”, centres around quality home environments; and Henderson Land Development’s Brand Post, named “Neighbourhood Treasures”, explores the unforgettable eateries and places of interest in Island West.  Taking an interesting tack, The Venetian Macau crafted their Brand Post in Chinese on SCMP’s Chinese lifestyle website nanzaozhinan.com and presents its various events and promotions in a dedicated online channel entitled “Cotai Strip”.

Updated frequently, content on SCMP Brand Post is created by a team dedicated to understanding advertisers’ brand essence and generating stories to foster brand affiliation through topics intimately related to the brands. Through such relevant content, SCMP Brand Post brings clients closer to a ready audience that is attuned to the consumption environments intrinsic to their brands. Available on SCMP online properties including scmp.com, SCMPChinese.com, nanzaozhinan.com, tablet and mobile apps, SCMP Brand Post clients are well positioned to connect with SCMP’s expanding digital audience. From January to this month this year, on average scmp.com recorded over 10 million monthly page views and is visited regularly by 2.8 million monthly unique users.

“A cozy and smart home environment is at the heart of HKT Premier’s connection with consumers. With thoroughly-researched and well-crafted stories, SCMP Brand Post has created a strong brand association for HKT Premier as well as facilitated a community that fosters interior design best practices,” said Ms. Michelle Chan, Assistant Vice President, HKT Premier.

Mr. Romanus Ng, General Manager, SCMP Advertising and Marketing Solutions, said, “South China Morning Post is recognised for its intrinsic and determined drive to create quality content for readers. SCMP Brand Post is an extension of that drive, tailor-making content closely related to advertisers’ brands and thereby creating a digital landscape where our clients can engage readers through vivid storytelling. The content, be they stories, photos or videos, are relevant to the consumption habits of their consumers while not directly promoting the advertising brands. In a native advertising environment, brands are able to draw consumers closer to them unassumingly.”

Mr. Ng continued, “Through sponsored content, clients are tapping into SCMP’s established audience reach that matches their consumer demographic. We are excited to be able to help marketers bridge the gap with consumers. Going forward, SCMP Brand Post will continue to innovate and grow together with our clients.”
