The SCMP is delighted to work with Debrett’s to celebrate their brilliance in the first Debrett’s Global Series.”

Ms Joanne Milner, Chief Executive at Debrett’s, said: “Hong Kong is a world class city, steeped in a long history of global impact, so it made a fitting choice for the launch of our first global series of the Debrett’s 100s. The Debrett’s Hong Kong 100 list has been meticulously compiled in consultation with independent experts in each field. Every individual demonstrates outstanding qualities of influence, achievement and inspiration, shaping their environments to the collective benefit of society. We are privileged to work with the SCMP on our first Global Series.”

Stories of the 22 finalists of the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards 2015 were captured in feature articles in the South China Morning Post and on SCMP.com in the summer. These finalists were selected from nominees recommended by 14 organisations: the Association for Conservation of Hong Kong Indigenous Languages, Community Art Network, Community Business, Designing Hong Kong, Hong Kong Arts Centre, Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union, Hong Kong Red Cross, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Mother’s Choice, Social Ventures Hong Kong, St. James’ Settlement, The Nesbitt Centre, The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.

The Spirit of Hong Kong Awards 2015 winners are:

iBakery – Corporate Citizen Award
Tung Wah Group of Hospitals set up the first iBakery café in Kennedy Town as a social-enterprise store with a baking area to cater to a growing number of supportive customers and corporate clients. At its seven facilities across Hong Kong, iBakery employs 60 staff, more than half of them adults with special needs, including Down’s syndrome and autism. The social mission of iBakery is to train people and show that people with disabilities can be happy and productive. It is about inclusion in the community. iBakery has teamed up with hotel groups and others to provide cookie recipes and training for the staff.

Light Be – Lion Rock Entrepreneur Award
Light Be, the brainchild of Ricky Yu, provides much-needed housing for single mothers and underprivileged families in Hong Kong. His discontent with the long waiting list for public housing jolted him out of his successful career, after which he devoted himself to finding landlords with a philanthropic outlook, help renovate their properties and rent them out at affordable rates. His labour and commitment have helped many families put a roof over their heads.

Ms May Yam Siu-fong – Community Contribution Award
May Yam has never stopped helping others even when she was tackling her own struggles. She has volunteered for the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong hotline since 1997 and expanded her role to its executive committee in 2003. She has gone through two divorces, battled with thyroid cancer nine years ago, brought up three children and is now running a bookstore. Always looking at life with positivity, May used her experience to help others through the Samaritan hotline and she believes she is learning how to do it better every day.

Mr Ko Cheung-chuen – Compassion Ambassador Award
Ko Cheung-chuen devoted four decades of his life teaching secondary school children. Once a teacher in a Band One school in Wan Chai, he realised that there just might be other students that needed his help more. So he quit that school and moved to a far more challenging one in Tuen Mun. Tackling discipline problems and, at times, fending off gangsters from school area were just some of his challenges. Mr Ko helped students academically, but more importantly, he inspired them to lead a meaningful life beyond the classroom. Now in his retirement, he continues his mission at times as a supply teacher and a father figure to many of his schoolchildren.

Ms Tong Siu-yin – Cultural Preservation Award
Losing her eyesight before the age of two, Tong Siu-yin overcame this twist of fate and supported herself as a telephone operator. In 2008, she fell in love with naamyam (南音), “music of the south” – a genre which blind singers in ancient China used as a way to make money travelling from village to village. While conservationists race against time to preserve naamyam in Hong Kong, Ms Tong is doing her part to keep this tradition alive through live performance and recordings.

Professor Ronald Li Tang-wai – Innovating for Good Award
Professor Ronald Li is the Founder of Novoheart and a Director of the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medical Consortium at the University of Hong Kong. Using only 2.5 ml of blood from a patient, Professor Li is able to create a mini-human heart within six months, which can be used to show any adverse effects before a drug is given to the patient. For example, cancer drugs can be tested on the mini-human heart for any cardio effects. It is believed that this bio-artificial heart approach has huge potential in the development and testing of drugs, as well as organ transplant.

Mr Foo Yuen-wai – Overcoming Personal Challenge Award
Foo Yuen-wai is wheelchair-bound but that does not deter him from pursuing his sailing passion. With the help from a charity called “Sailability Hong Kong”, he not only tried his hands at the sport, he showed such talent that he represented Hong Kong in international competitions within the first year of sailing. He is now shooting for a chance to quality for the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year. His perseverance is admirable and inspiring.

Mr Chan Kwong-hing – People’s Choice Award (public voting)
For the past three decades, blood donations have become a habit for police officer Chan Kwong-hing. After 256 blood donations and two bone marrow donations, he is well qualified to educate the public about the importance of blood donation. In person, he encourages people to consider bone marrow donation and he is keen to emphasise that it is less painful that generally feared. His bone marrow has helped the same patient twice, using different bone marrow extraction techniques.

SCMP GROUP LTD (SEHK:583) Announces Interim Results with revenue of $549.3 million and Net Profit Attributable to Shareholders of $208.7 million

HONG KONG, 25 August 2015 –

SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK: 583) yesterday announced the interim results for 2015. Interim revenue was $549.3 million, 8% lower than the same period in 2014. Net profit attributable to shareholders, which included a fair value gain on investment properties of $137.1 million, and a gain on partial disposal of interests in an associate of $43.3 million, was $208.7 million compared to $48.2 million for the same period in 2014. Carving out these gains, net profit from normal operations amounted to $28.3 million compared to $48.2 million in the same period in 2014.

In the first half of 2015, Hong Kong experienced muted financial performance, with the secular challenges from 2014 carrying over into the first two quarters. Locally, retail sales value for the first five months dropped 1.8%1, and luxury retail sales decreased year-on-year by more than 10% in June 20152. With diminished retail consumption, a narrowed IPO pipeline in Hong Kong and China, together with stock market volatility in the US, Europe and at home, the overall anemic market sentiment has caused advertisers to pull back on their spending.

In spite of this uncertainty, the SCMP Group remains steadfast on its path to continue fortifying existing revenue drivers, while growing and developing new growth thrusts organically and inorganically. Importantly, the Group’s fundamentals are strong.

For the interim period ended 30 June 2015, the Board of Directors resolved to declare an interim dividend payable of HK 1.3 cents per ordinary share.

The Newspaper division recorded a decrease in revenue by 8% as compared with same period of 2014. This decline is attributable to restrained retail and luxury market spending and the slow down from the financial sector, which in turn reduced the sales volume of display advertising and IPO notices. This drop however, was partly mitigated by the higher revenues from both digital subscription and online advertising. Print recruitment revenues also saw a decline from Classified Post and Jiu Jik. However, a gain was achieved in market share of online job volume through effective campaigns for CPjobs.com and Jiujik.com. The previous period when the division reported a loss in the first half was in 2009 at the time of the global financial crisis.

Overall circulation of South China Morning Post and Sunday Morning Post remained stable, with digital subscriptions continuing to grow strongly to offset the decline in print circulation. Total circulation revenue grew 2% for the period.

Total revenue from the Magazines division decreased 13%, as the lackluster retail and luxury market dampened advertising spending. Despite the weak market conditions, the women’s titles, including Cosmopolitan, Harper’s BAZAAR and ELLE were able to gain market share from our competitors, which further strengthened our dominant position in women’s monthly magazine market.

SCMP Group CEO Mr. Robin Hu noted, “Entering the second half of 2015, signs of significant recovery have not been apparent. In spite of this, the Group’s fundamentals are strong, and the company remains on its path to continue fortifying existing revenue drivers, while growing digital-specific revenues, and expanding overseas readership. Of note, the company’s diverse product portfolio that includes print, digital, outdoor and events, collectively increases the Group’s resilience during challenging times.”

“Internally, efficiency improvement programmes are already in place to strategically reduce operating expenses and optimise our processes to nurture homegrown talent, innovate green-field products, and capture emerging opportunities. By activating these growth strategies, together with prudently managing our strong fundamentals, the Group looks forward to building and managing our future growth”.

PRESS STATEMENT

HONG KONG, 21 July 2015 –

The South China Morning Post recently implemented changes to our Insight page as part of the plans to increase the pool of contributors to reflect society’s diversity of opinion. We notified our Op-Ed contributors and columnists of the changes, including a change in the way they submit contributions. They were invited to share with us their thoughts on columns in a bid to avoid a potential overlap with other editorial plans, and to introduce healthy competition for column space. These measures are consistent with practices of leading publications of repute, and are designed to heighten the quality of the SCMP’s Insight page. This is consistent with the SCMP’s constant drive to identify and implement ways to strengthen our content.

Regretfully, this operational change has been misinterpreted and erroneously reported. Comments and clarifications from the SCMP sometimes were not sought before these reports were published.

In particular, the Hong Kong Journalists Association’s (HKJA) recent annual report, released on 12 July 2015, includes a section titled “Post’s Column Policy Change Causes a Stir”. It states that there were “demand for pre-approval of topics” and the changes “resulted in the disappearance of some widely read regular columns”. The SCMP strongly objects to these baseless allegations.

We would like to reiterate that there is no such demand and as we continue to welcome contributions from columnists and other contributors as before, it is evident in our current Insight page that the SCMP now features an even larger pool of contributors. We have highlighted these views to the HKJA in a letter sent to the association last week.

We strongly believe in and uphold editorial objectivity and fairness, and share the HKJA’s Code of Ethics, an integral part of which is to eliminate distortion, conjecture and misrepresentation. We urge all to observe stringent applications of these principles as they are integral to the integrity and the well-being of our media industry.
