The South China Morning Post seeks a talented visual journalist to join its award-winning graphics team.
Purpose of the position:
The South China Morning Post is seeking an experienced and enterprising professional to join its award-winning infographics team. You should have acceptable design skills, a high interest in news and reporting, and experience with web development tools to produce visual journalism projects for digital, print, and social media. You will have a digital-first mindset with a keen understanding of the need for speed, accuracy, and brevity in creating content for SCMP.
In this role, you will:
Create visual stories, infographics, data visualizations, and visual explainers for online (mobile and desktop) and print
Have analytical and time-management skills, and have the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
Work with geographic and mapping resources
Produce scripts and manage databases to create informative and visually compelling projects
Work well independently and work in teams with reporters, designers, developers, engineers, and editors
Work with new web-related technologies and user interface design
Build interactive web applications that allow readers to search and explore data sets
Help maintain and improve our graphics templates.
Adhere to SCMP’s standards and mission of leading the global conversation on mainland China with trustworthy and comprehensive reporting
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Computer Science, Data Science, Graphic Design, or any other related qualifications, with relevant experience
Minimum 3 years of demonstrable experience in news media or equivalent
Good level of written and spoken English
Excellent communication skills
Creative, energetic, and independent with excellent critical thinking and interpersonal skills
Proficiency in: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, D3.js, SQL or similar, Excel or similar, Figma, QGIS or related Georeferencing software
Relevant experience in Observable, p5.js and Adobe Creative suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects) is a plus
Experience in information design, data visualization, and visual storytelling
Project management and organizational skills
