SCMP Group Announces 8% Increase in Revenue, Exceeding HK$1Billion for First Time Since 2008

Hong Kong, March 25, 2013 – SCMP Group Ltd (SEHK: 0583) announced today financial results for the year ended 31st December 2012.

Group revenue rose 8% from $946.1million in 2011 to $1019.6million in 2012, driven largely by new revenue sources, including the newly acquired Elle magazine and the contract printing opportunity, and higher revenue contribution from the Magazine publishing business.

Net profit attributable to shareholders declined by 20% from $409.9million to $329.1million, with profit and earnings from normal operations largely impacted by increased investment in new digital products, as well as the increase in costs associated with the new Elle acquisition and the new contract printing business.

The largest revenue source (76%) continues to be the newspaper publishing business, which remained steady at $773.6million compared to $779.2million in 2011. However, net profit declined by 19% to $97.5million in 2012 from $120.5million in 2011, again due to an increase in costs and investments.

The Magazine publishing business grew with the acquisition of Elle Magazine and its related products, and continued growth in the existing products Cosmopolitan, CosmoGirl! and Harper’s Bazaar. Net profit from the Magazine publishing business increased 23% from $30.3million to $37.3million.

Excluding fair value gains on investment properties of $170.7million and $237.7million for 2012 and 2011 respectively, net profit from normal operations decreased 8% from $172.2million to $158.4million in 2012.

Earnings per share for 2012 was 21.1cents, reflecting a 20% decrease from 26.3cents in 2011. Final dividend payable per share was 4.5 cents, increased 13% as compared to 4.0 cents in 2011.

Dr. David Pang, Chairman for SCMP Group, commented, “We’ve been operating in a changing media economy, which has been impacted by a reduction in IPOs, a quiet recruitment sector and lackluster property market as a result of recent market cooling regulations by the Government. All of these had an impact on traditionally important revenue sources for the South China Morning Post. However, we have been able to mitigate that impact by maintaining a solid overall newspaper publishing business and the realization of new revenue from our investment in Elle. During the year, we have also built a new contract printing business, a suite of enhanced digital products, a strengthened talent pool and continue to look out for valuable business to reinforce our capabilities in the publishing business. We believe our investments made in the past year will further strengthen our business in the years to come, and remain positive about our ability to deliver value and performance in line with the Hong Kong economy in the coming year.”

South China Morning Post launches the all-new STYLE magazine – the voice of avant garde Asia

HONG KONG, March 8, 2013 – The South China Morning Post today launched the inaugural edition of its new STYLE magazine, which is distributed as a complimentary copy with the newspaper once a month.

At last night’s launch party, the excitement and buzz was evident amongst a very high turn-out of Hong Kong’s luxury lifestyle advertisers. STYLE editor Jacqueline Tsang introduced the magazine as the much-needed authoritative guide to the world of culture and luxury for discerning avant garde followers.

“The new STYLE is about providing information for Asia¡¦s avant garde, those privileged enough to enjoy and appreciate the good life and who are eager for a publication that gives them an in-depth take on luxury, rather than just reporting on happenings and events,” said Ms Tsang.

“There are magazines in Hong Kong that offer information on fashion and luxury news, but we aim to provide the story behind the story, and a more insightful and intellectual take on the business of style.”

Already advertisers have shown very keen interest, with several signing long-term advertising contracts with the new publication. Adopting a larger format than the original STYLE magazine, the all-new publication has a classy and contemporary design, glossier stock and offers stunning photography, exclusive interviews and expert insights for its readers.

Leading the project, Winnie Chung, Chief Editor, Specialist Publications, said “STYLE has a bold new look, a fresh new approach to content, a significantly increased budget for top-notch photography and interviews, and a daring, more cutting-edge approach to page design.”

“Luxury magazines are a highly competitive market, but we are confident that STYLE is really unique. Our insider’s look on the lifestyle of the privileged will set it apart from the rest.”

The launch of STYLE is hot on the heels of another initiative by the South China Morning Post to boost its lifestyle content. Last week, the five tabloids – Money Post, Health Post, Family Post, Food and Wine and Lifestyle were intregrated into a new broadsheet section – Life in the City section of the paper, and Personal Investments was newly introduced into the Business section on Mondays.

A further glossy magazine, a weekend guide called 48 Hours will be introduced on Thursdays from April, rounding up a fuller portfolio of content. On Thursday this week, an additional new annual restaurant guide, 100 Top Tables 2013, A CEO Dining Guide, was distributed free to subscribers and will be available at Dymocks and selected supermarkets and convenience stores for $158.

STYLE and all the new content from 48 Hours, Life, Personal Investments and 100 Top Tables is also available online at the newspaper’s recently revamped website, www.scmp.com. STYLE magazine also is supported by a specially designed iPad edition.

South China Morning Post launches smartjob and Classified Post mobile apps

HONG KONG, March 4, 2013 – South China Morning Post’s Recruitment Services department has announced two new enhancements of its recruitment products with the launch of a smartjob mobile app and a Classified Post mobile app.

“By introducing these two apps, we’ve made it even easier for jobseekers to find the job they want, with on-the-spot access to the best selection of premium jobs in the City through their smartphones or tablets,” said Alex Ho, Senior Director, Newspaper & Recruitment Services. “The apps enable easy search via keywords, job function, industry and job level and it’s easy to share with friends via social networks.”

SCMP’s smartjob, which launched exclusively as a website just over a year ago, targets young, up and coming junior and mid-level professionals who believe they have what it takes to get ahead in their careers. It is an optimal job search resource that focuses on maintaining only a quality portfolio of professional jobs online, avoiding the market practice of populating a portal with old or duplicated jobs.

Classified Post, SCMP’s highly regarded newspaper and website targeting middle to senior positions, underwent a print revamp last week and is introducing a mobile app to enhance ready access to its formidable database of the city’s top executive and senior management positions, supporting the needs of busy managers and maintaining Classified Post’s dominant position in the market.

“The Classified Post app gives you on-the-go access to the latest executive job openings from the top companies in Hong Kong and across the region.” commented Alex Ho. “It is also easy to search for jobs by keyword, or by almost every job criteria you can imagine.” added Alex. “Once you have started and have established your job criteria you can then tailor your job alerts to suit your own timing, whether on a daily or weekly basis.”

Both smartjob and Classified Post mobile apps can be easily downloaded from App Store or Google Play

HONG KONG, February 22, 2013 – The South China Morning Post has won five awards from the world’s most prestigious newspaper design association for its graphic designs and photographs published last year.

The US-based, 1,500-member strong Society for News Design judged the paper’s design as among the world’s best in its 34th annual Best of Newspaper Design competition.

The Post’s senior graphics designer Adolfo Arranz was the biggest winner with three awards in the Features Information Graphics category. He was honoured with a silver award for a graphic on wine tasting that was published on May 26. It was the first time anyone from the Post has been honoured with a silver award in the competition.

Arranz also received two Awards of Excellence for feature design pages for work on the Tour de France and the ancient Olympic Games, published on June 30 and July 25 respectively.

The Post’s former graphics director Simon Scarr was honoured with an Award of Excellence for News Pages Design for a graphical presentation of retail statistics over the city’s pre-Christmas shopping rush, published on November 29.

They shared the limelight with the Post’s photography team, which scooped an Award of Excellence in the category of Photography/Multiple Photos Project page or spread. The photography team was led by Yves Sieur.

The Post’s editor-in-chief, Wang Xiangwei, said: “We are delighted to have won these awards in a truly international competition. They recognise not only the outstanding talent we have at the Post but also our long-standing commitment to excellence in design, photography and innovative infographics.”

“It’s a tradition we will continue to build upon in the years ahead,” Wang said.

Last year, the Post won nine awards in the annual competition which attracts entries from general circulation newspapers from around the world and honours design, graphics and photography.

The society holds several competitions in a year focused on the best work in visual communication – whether print or multimedia, professional or student-produced.

SCMP Group is now an official Caring Company of Hong Kong

HONG KONG, February 19, 2013 – The South China Morning Post Publishers Limited (SEHK: 583) today announced that it has just been awarded by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service the Caring Company logo in recognition of the SCMP Group’s commitment in caring for the community, caring for its employees and caring for the environment over the previous year.

“The SCMP Group is honored to be recognized as an official Caring Company of Hong Kong,” said Robin Hu, Chief Executive Officer, SCMP Group Ltd. “We remain committed to the high standards we achieved to receive this award. “I would also like to thank the staff for their commitment to the company and for their involvement in all levels of the criteria of this award,” Robin Hu said.

The criteria that measure that commitment are quite stringent. Under the criteria for caring for the community, SCMP staff volunteered for a food programme for the poor organized by community partner St James’ Settlement. The SCMP had earlier donated money to St James’ Settlement through its Heart of HK Relief Fund.

In terms of caring for the employees, SCMP Group had an industry-high staff retention level in 2012 and has, according to Towers Watson, been maintaining a lower than the market average staff turnover rate in the past few years. The Group recognizes employees as very important assets and as such provides the usual leave and medical benefits as well as marriage; compassionate and paternity leave.

Staff welfare is high on the company’s agenda, with a series of staff work and social gatherings throughout the year, including annual staff party where long-service awards are presented; an internship programme for 30 students; and quarterly sales performance awards to employees. There is also sporting activities like a snooker competition, dragon boat racing and squid fishing for the family.

The group’s approach to caring for the environment starts with energy and water conservation in the workplace as well as reducing light and water pollution. This ranges from only using lighting and air conditioning when needed to paper recycling and striving towards paperless offices.

In the printing operations, using recycled or recycling-rich newsprint as far as the quality tolerates – last year, about 50% of the newsprint was from recycled paper; recycling used plates – 40 tons a year; about 1,000 tons of waste newsprint recycled a year; all prepress chemical waste is recycled; and using old equipment for spares rather than discarding them.

The Group also has a “green” partnership with World Wild Fund for Nature. Operation Santa Claus, a joint campaign organized by the SCMP and RTHK, donated HK$838,000 to support the WWF’s NEED project – No to Environmental & Ecological Destruction – Education for Sustainable Development Programme for Underprivileged Students – from August 2012 to August 2013. NEED creates additional learning opportunities for underprivileged students so that they can acquire the IT skills and understand the existing conservation policies and issues in Hong Kong.
