Shenzhen (September 6, 2026) —SHENZHEN, China — Over 400 media representatives from across the region gathered in Shenzhen on Saturday, September 5, 2026 for the Asia-Pacific Media Forum, a flagship event under the 2026 APEC “China Year” series. Designed to foster cross-border cooperation on content, talent, and emerging technologies ahead of November’s APEC summit in the city, the forum served as the backdrop for key regional partnerships.
Against this backdrop of heightened regional engagement, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) and Nanfang Media Group officially signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a long-term framework for news collaboration, event organisation, and media technology innovation across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Highlighting the vision behind the agreement, Tammy Tam, Publisher, South China Morning Post, said: ”This year means a lot to the GBA as our neighbour Shenzhen will host the APEC Leaders Summit, while Hong Kong will welcome the APEC Financial Ministers Meeting. SCMP is honoured and pleased to forge this meaningful partnership with GD Today, the only and influential English news multimedia platform in Guangdong Province, to explore greater potential for more collaboration in various joint projects, including comprehensive coverage about GBA, and China, in a fact-based and convincing way to the region and the world. Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland, we look forward to having a great partnership with our great partner in Guangdong.”
Huang Can, editor-in-chief of Nanfang Media Group, said he expected both sides to “work together to tell the stories of Guangdong and Hong Kong, the GBA and China” to local, regional and global audiences. Huang added he hopes to work with more Asia-Pacific media partners to share regional opportunities, promote people-to-people connectivity, uphold journalistic principles and present the world with a real, three-dimensional and comprehensive Asia-Pacific.
Under the agreement, the two media organisations will leverage their complementary capabilities—SCMP as an international English-language news provider and Nanfang Media Group as a leading South China publisher—to foster closer exchange and deepen coverage of regional development.
Key areas of cooperation include:
- Editorial & Content Exchange
- Events & Community Outreach
- Media Innovation & AI
The framework serves as a non-binding foundation for potential joint projects, with specific implementations to be finalised in future agreements.
