Top Performing Funds and Fund Managers acknowledged at the South China Morning Post Fund Manager of the Year Awards 2005

Hong Kong, February 20, 2006 – The South China Morning Post Fund Manager of the Year Awards 2005 today acknowledged the top performing funds and their respective fund managers, covering different global markets and all asset classes.

The investment funds award was organised by the South China Morning Post in association with Standard & Poor’s Fund Services and sponsored by American International Assurance.

In the leading group awards, which evaluate the overall performance of fund management groups, Fidelity Investments Management (Hong Kong) Limited took the honour for the 3-year, 5-year and 10-year categories – the first time a single house has won all three top awards since the 15 year history of the event.

Among the other awards, from a pool of more than 1,950 retail market-oriented funds registered for sale, 70 winners were recognised from a total of 29 sectors.

Frederick Ma, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of HKSAR Government, was the guest of honour at the Awards presentation ceremony and presented the award certificates to the major winners.

"The huge success of the Funds Awards highlights how important the fund management business has become in Hong Kong, and underlines Hong Kong’s position as the leading centre for asset management in Asia," said Mr. Surinder Kathpalia, managing director of Standard & Poor’s. "Asia holds a third of the world’s wealth today, and pension assets in the region are expected to triple over the next decade, representing a staggering pool of investible funds", he added.

The South China Morning Post Fund Manager of the Year 2005 was assessed using a methodology known as Relative Risk-Adjusted Ratio as was the case last year. This calculation evaluates the performance of a fund and the consistency of that performance relative to other funds in its peer group sector, and is used for all investment funds awards S&P conducts around the globe.

South China Morning Post Scoops Top Pata Gold Award

Hong Kong, February 20, 2006 – The South China Morning Post has won the Pacific Asia Travel Association 2006 Grand Award for Heritage for its "Hong Kong’s Vibrant Rural Communities Campaign", a seven-part series, published in October 2005.

The project was written by veteran Post reporter Kevin Sinclair and journalist Anneliese O’Young Ruo-hua, to recognize traditional rural communities where residents had taken the initiative to make life better for all.

The entry was selected by PATA judges as an exceptional achievement which set travel industry standards for excellence and innovation. The judges said the series "vividly illustrates how the traditional villages have adapted to the 21st century and the role they play in conserving Hong Kong’s heritage".

Editor of the South China Morning Post, Fanny Fung said the paper was delighted that the project had won such a prestigious award. "This is one of a long list of awards we’ve won recently which recognize the Post’s editorial excellence. This one is particularly gratifying for us as we have such a strong stance on environmental and heritage issues," said Fung.

Sinclair writes the Below the Border column about New Territories affairs and has spent many years encouraging and education people about the preservation of the past. He commented, "The series was well-received in Hong Kong, both by the seven villages which were featured directly, and by the whole community which was equally proud of the work being done to preserve Hong Kong’s traditional way of life."

Over the past half century Sinclair has won five gold awards for travel writing from PATA, the world’s largest travel and tourism body. One of those awards was in 2000 for an earlier SCMP series about beautified villages which encouraged residents to improve their environment.

Sinclair and other winners will receive their awards during the 55th PATA Annual Conference in Pattaya, Thailand, April 23-27, and "Living Villages" will also be on display during the conference.

SCMP/Harper’s Bazaar StyleAwards 2006

[HK – January 13] Last night, the South China Morning Post and Harper’s Bazaar co-hosted the SCMP/Harper’s Bazaar StyleAwards Gala Presentation to announce the 13 winners of the awards.

Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city that stands at the pinnacle of style. Its spirit is vibrant, innovative, adaptive and entrepreneurial; and with this spirit the people of Hong Kong help define the style of the city and make it the true world-class metropolis it is today. Like other world-class cities, Hong Kong thrives on diversity – from cuisines to fashion to interior design and within each category the Hong Kong style carries a different dimension.

The SCMP/Harper’s Bazaar StyleAwards 2006 were created to recognise the intangible yet critical areas of this style. These areas are translated into 13 competing categories: Fashion Photographer, Fashion Designer, Model, Cover Girl, Airline Lounge, Restaurant, Night Spot, Food Retailer, Spa, Residential Development, Car and Gadget and StyleMaker of the Year. The StyleMaker award is presented to the individual who successfully personifies this unique Hong Kong style through his or her vision, contributions and innovations. And this year, the StyleMaker award went to Stephen Chow, the comedy king in Hong Kong cinema and now an internationally renowned filmmaker.

The editors of the South China Morning Post and Harper’s Bazaar identified individuals and brands that have the confidence and courage to create and inspire. A subsequent public polling was conducted via scmp.com and Harper’s Bazaar to determine the winners, and in order to ensure the integrity of the polling, PricewaterhouseCoopers was hired as an external auditor.

On the evening of January 12, a gala event was held at the Island Shangri-la Ballroom to honor the winners. Every detail was meticulously planned to ensure the evening lives up to the Awards’ vision. As part of the evening’s highlights, a chef was flown in from Arzak, a three Michelin-star restaurant in Spain, to create a truly unique culinary experience for the 300 attending guests. SCMP/Harper’s Bazaar StyleAwards 2006 brings a new dimension to style in Hong Kong.

SCMP Group Limited reports strong Interim results

Highlights

  • Turnover: HK$632.9 million
  • Operating profit: HK$217.9 million
  • Profit attributable to shareholders: HK$175.0 million
  • Earnings per share (HK cents): 11.2
  • Dividend (HK cents): 8.0

Hong Kong, 13, September 2007 — SCMP Group Limited (SEHK: 583) ("the Group") reported a 19% growth in profit attributable to shareholders to HK$175.0 million for the first six months ended June 30, 2007. Turnover rose 9% to HK$632.9 million.

The Board of Directors declared an interim dividend of 8 HK cents per share.

Operating costs before depreciation and amortisation increased 4% or HK$16.7 million. The average cost of newsprint rose 5% from US$604 to US$635 per metric ton. Staff costs increased 6% while rental and utilities expenses rose 27% largely due to higher rental of office premises.

Business Performance

The Group’s interim results were boosted by a 31% growth in notices advertising and a 7% growth in display advertising sales. Recruitment advertising revenue increased by 4.5%. The unaudited circulation of South China Morning Post and Sunday Morning Post rose to 105,000 and 80,600, respectively.

Classifiedpost.com underwent a complete revamp to provide a more user-friendly interface and more advanced functionalities to job seekers and advertisers. With the launch of the new site in April 2007, page views rose 10% year-on-year.

Scmp.com was also revamped, enabling greater integration between the paper and the website and boosting its content with more multimedia, personalisation, mobile WAP access and interactive functions. The website was re-launched in May and had approximately 18,300 subscribers as of end-June.

The Magazine Division reported a 68% increase in net profit mainly from the strong performance of Cosmopolitan and Harper’s Bazaar. Reflecting the strong momentum of consumer spending, the Hearst’s titles showed impressive growth in advertising revenue. Nevertheless, competition is keen and the higher cost of maintaining circulation and slower growth rate in advertising revenue will create pressure on profitability.

Outlook

First half results have been encouraging, given the strong economy and active investment market. Unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2007 was at its lowest level in the past nine years. Management is positive that these favorable economic conditions will continue in the second half of the year.

Print’s recruitment revenue is expected to be maintained, despite the shifting trend towards online recruitment, however, notices revenue will be affected by the change in Hong Kong listing rules in the second half year.

Classifiedpost.com unveils its new look

Hong Kong, 12 April 2007 — Classifiedpost.com, one of Hong Kong’s most popular and effective recruitment websites, unveiled its new face today. Beyond its more user-friendly interface, the new classifiedpost.com offers many advanced recruitment functionalities.

A key feature of the upgrade is the Applicant Management System (AMS), a comprehensive e-hiring solution that enables companies to personalise the various hiring functions to meet their needs. With the new system, users can pre-define the candidate selection criteria when posting their jobs real-time, keep track of the hiring stages for each candidate and set up email templates to speed up the recruitment process. The enhanced platform also gives companies the flexibility of registering multiple-users.

"Our aim is to provide a more interactive recruitment platform to the market," said Grace Fung, Director of Classified Advertising. "Companies can now manage their e-hiring process from job posting to job offer and gain a full picture of the responsiveness to their recruitment effort. In short, it means more effective recruitment and better return on investment."

The new classifiedpost.com also promises better user experience for job seekers with improved navigation, enhanced privacy protection and timely updates of the latest job openings through RSS (Real Simple Syndication) service. But Fung stressed that the site offers more value than digital advancement, "The uniqueness of classifiedpost.com remains its strong editorial content. We will keep leveraging the core strength of our print product to provide relevant information to job seekers, who can now browse related industry news during their job search, and continue to enjoy free access to many useful job-seeking tips and career advice provided by industry experts and career consultants."

As one of the city’s most popular recruitment websites, classifiedpost.com has over 270,000 members and more than 10 million page views per month. Fung is confident that the revamp will help to boost traffic and registration, attract more quality candidates, and further strengthen classifiedpost.com’s position as the definitive e-recruitment platform in the market.
