Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city that stands at the pinnacle of style. Its spirit is vibrant, innovative, adaptive and entrepreneurial; and with this spirit the people of Hong Kong help define the style of the city and make it the true world-class metropolis it is today. Like other world-class cities, Hong Kong thrives on diversity – from cuisines to fashion to interior design and within each category the Hong Kong style carries a different dimension.
The SCMP/Harper’s Bazaar StyleAwards 2006 were created to recognise the intangible yet critical areas of this style. These areas are translated into 13 competing categories: Fashion Photographer, Fashion Designer, Model, Cover Girl, Airline Lounge, Restaurant, Night Spot, Food Retailer, Spa, Residential Development, Car and Gadget and StyleMaker of the Year. The StyleMaker award is presented to the individual who successfully personifies this unique Hong Kong style through his or her vision, contributions and innovations. And this year, the StyleMaker award went to Stephen Chow, the comedy king in Hong Kong cinema and now an internationally renowned filmmaker.
The editors of the South China Morning Post and Harper’s Bazaar identified individuals and brands that have the confidence and courage to create and inspire. A subsequent public polling was conducted via scmp.com and Harper’s Bazaar to determine the winners, and in order to ensure the integrity of the polling, PricewaterhouseCoopers was hired as an external auditor.
On the evening of January 12, a gala event was held at the Island Shangri-la Ballroom to honor the winners. Every detail was meticulously planned to ensure the evening lives up to the Awards’ vision. As part of the evening’s highlights, a chef was flown in from Arzak, a three Michelin-star restaurant in Spain, to create a truly unique culinary experience for the 300 attending guests. SCMP/Harper’s Bazaar StyleAwards 2006 brings a new dimension to style in Hong Kong.
