SCMP’S CHINA FINTECH REPORT REVEALS LATEST TRENDS AND INNOVATIONS IN WORLD’S LARGEST FINTECH MARKET

HONG KONG, 28 October 2020 – The South China Morning Post announced today the release of its inaugural China Fintech Report, a comprehensive resource on the latest trends and future trajectory of the world’s largest financial technology ecosystem.

The report provides essential investment insights and market analysis of the future of this rapidly growing sector, providing a key source of competitor analysis and learnings for traditional financial services. China’s massive domestic financial market has an estimated 87% of consumers using fintech services, a US$29 trillion (200 trillion yuan) mobile payment market in 2019, and the largest global market for online securities trading.

As China opens its financial system to foreign players and prepares to launch the world’s first national virtual currency, its fintech sector is poised to make a major impact on the global financial market. The report includes exclusive case studies on key industry players, an overview of funding activity and deals, and in-depth sector analysis of digital payments, digital banking, wealthtech, insurtech, and blockchain.

Key findings of the report include:

  • China poised to become the first cashless society: The shift will be mobile-first, with mobile payments already accounting for four out of every five payments and more than half the value of all non-cash retail payments in China.
  • Massive growth potential for online wealth management: Personal investable assets in China are estimated to grow at a compound rate of 10% from US$23 trillion (160 trillion yuan) in 2019 to US$42 trillion (287 trillion yuan) by 2025, with US$10 trillion (69 trillion yuan) expected to be invested via online platforms by 2025.
  • Expanding market for insurtech: Online insurance premiums currently account for less than 8% of total Chinese insurance premiums, suggesting the sector has a long way to grow as China overtakes the US to become the world’s biggest insurance market by the mid-2030s.
  • Blockchain a national priority: China’s banks are ramping up blockchain use with applications in SME lending, risk management and operation efficiency, while China prepares to launch the world’s first sovereign digital currency, with a large-scale rollout expected to come before China hosts the 2022 Winter Olympics.

“The fintech companies of China, which are already pushing boundaries and setting the bar higher than any other company anywhere else, are expected to expand beyond Chinese shores into the broader world,” said SCMP’s Business Editor Eugene Tang. “The coronavirus pandemic, which has led to paradigm shifts in the way humans earn and pay, will only accelerate the rise of fintech, with increased investor and consumer appetite for online financial services.”

The report is targeted at those watching the global trajectory of fintech, including corporate executives, professional services providers, investment professionals, and academics. SCMP’S CHINA HEALTHCARE REPORT REVEALS KEY INSIGHTS INTO WORLD’S SECOND-LARGEST HEALTHCARE MARKET

HONG KONG, 13 August 2020  South China Morning Post announced today the release of its inaugural China Healthcare Report that comprehensively examines industry innovations and trends that will impact the global market, as well as ambitious reforms that will reshape China’s domestic healthcare market.

China’s healthcare industry currently leads the world in double-digit growth and has an outsized impact on the global healthcare market as the second-largest healthcare market by expenditure – US$3.5 trillion in 2018. The report also tracks the impact of Covid-19 on structural shifts in the global supply chain of healthcare products and includes a review of Covid-19 vaccine developments and leading healthcare innovators and industry leaders in China.

The report features deep dive case studies on the latest developments in the business of China’s healthcare industry, including opportunities, risks, and predictions. The report is created by SCMP Research and leverages the Post’s unmatched access into China, covering major sectors such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices and supplies manufacturing, service providers, and healthcare technology. Several major findings include:

  • Massive investments in R&D and innovation: China’s combined pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical R&D spending is forecast to grow at a 23 percent compound annual rate until 2023, when it will reach US$49 billion, accounting for 23 percent of the world’s total spending on drug discovery and testing.
  • Rapid growth of China’s biopharmaceutical industry: Biopharmaceutical sales in China have more than doubled since 2016 and are projected to reach almost $50 billion by 2021. China’s capacity to create best-in-class drugs could rival that of America and Europe before 2030.
  • Global manufacturing tech giants tap into medical devices and equipment: Chinese medical supplies accounted for US$10 billion or 2.6 percent of the total exports in Q1 2020. The government’s Made in China 2025 strategic plan calls for a greater focus on innovation to bring manufacturing up the value chain for high-tech medical devices.
  • China’s dominance in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients global exports: China manufactures 40 percent of APIs used worldwide and is a leading supplier of basic chemicals to the global pharmaceutical industry, worth 384.3 billion yuan (US$54 billion) in 2018.
  • China’s foray into health-technology: The Covid-19 outbreak prompted a 20x increase in diagnoses and 10x jump in prescriptions on online healthcare platforms, and accelerated the adoption of AI in CT scans, algorithms for Covid-19 detection in genomic sequencing, and AI-based research platforms for vaccines.

SCMP’s Executive Editor Chow Chung-yan said: “The world is facing an acute healthcare challenge when people are living much longer, populations are rapidly ageing, and healthcare costs are rising. China aims to significantly improve its healthcare standards to be on par with those in developed nations by 2030. This will spur innovation in the sector, provide impetus for growth in the global healthcare industry, and catapult Chinese healthcare firms onto the international stage.”

The report is targeted at those interested in understanding the complexity of the Chinese healthcare market, including academics, investors and technologists. SCMP LAUNCHES NEW DIGITAL SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE TO ADVANCE INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM IN THE DIGITAL AGE

HONG KONG, 27 July 2020 – The South China Morning Post announced today the launch of a new subscription service for SCMP.com and the SCMP app. Beginning in August, it will roll out in phases over several months across the world.

This announcement marks the next phase of SCMP’s digital transformation and its exponential growth as a global news company. The English-language media platform reached upwards of 50 million monthly readers in recent months, comprising a mostly international audience that relies on SCMP for its unparalleled and trusted expertise on China and Asia.

With the introduction of this reader revenue initiative, SCMP is safeguarding the future of the 116-year-old news organisation and its independent journalism, with critical and essential coverage that explains China’s growing influence and how it impacts and challenges the world.

Readers will be able to access some articles for free, before they are prompted with a message to subscribe for further unlimited access. Subscribers will receive award-winning news reporting and opinions, along with the in-depth analysis and investigative journalism that have come to be expected from SCMP. They will also enjoy personalisation features across SCMP’s platforms that enhance the reading and discovery experience, along with privileged access to SCMP’s virtual and in-person events. All information critical to community health and safety will continue to be freely accessible to all readers.

Said SCMP CEO Gary Liu, “SCMP has long championed the plurality of voices in Asia with independent journalism and we are firmly committed to continue serving our readers with  comprehensive coverage of China and Asia. Advertising alone can no longer sustain high-quality journalism in the digital age, so we must continue to evolve our business models and diversify our revenue streams.

“Our readership growth has been an encouraging validation of SCMP’s editorial quality and professionalism  and we believe this initiative will strengthen the journalistic excellence that our readers deserve and further our mission to lead the global conversation on China.”

SCMP has been diversifying its revenue streams to build sustainable business models for the future. Last month, the company announced SCMP Research, a new paid knowledge vertical that publishes commercial reports on leading industries in China. In May, it launched SCMP Lighthouse, a sophisticated first-party data platform that positions the Post as a preferred digital advertising platform with unparalleled consumer insights to drive efficiencies and improve campaign ROI. It has also ramped up its events business with a calendar of 40+ virtual webinars this year – a fourfold increase over in-person events initially planned at the start of the year.

Kindly refer to the letter from SCMP’s Editor-in-Chief to our readers here.

SCMP DRIVES CAMPAIGN EFFECTIVENESS AND OPTIMISATION WITH ‘SCMP LIGHTHOUSE’ LAUNCH

HONG KONG, 29 June 2020 – The South China Morning Post, a leading global media company, announced today the launch of ‘SCMP LIGHTHOUSE’ – a sophisticated first-party data platform that offers marketers unparalleled consumer insights to drive efficiencies and improve their campaign’s ROI.

As the first news media organisation in Asia to launch a proprietary insight and activation platform based on its first-party data , ‘SCMP LIGHTHOUSE’ provides advertisers with the tools necessary to target audiences with greater precision. Built on SCMP’s first-party cookies with known recency, provenance and quality, this free and transparent insight tool will allow users to create bespoke audiences on SCMP’s profiles, discover insights in real-time, and easily compare them across geographies.

Developed with privacy at its core and on publisher first-party cookies, ‘SCMP LIGHTHOUSE’ was created as a proprietary in-house platform and leverages on the Post’s global readership of more than 50m monthly average users (MAU) across key territories such as the USA (37%), Asia (32%) and the rest of the world (31%). The platform offers access to quality audience insights and allows partners to activate against geo-specific attributes to bring incremental audiences and value to marketers.

“This platform is our answer to the rising governmental and browser regulations and the negative impact it has had on marketers ability to target important and valuable audiences,“ said SCMP’s Vice President of Digital Ian Hocking. “We believe that publishers are best placed to target users with value-added data that can build strategic partnerships.”

“This is an important step for SCMP. Having scaled, adding value with first-party data means we can understand the value a user sees in SCMP and connect an advertiser via our trusted first-party relationship. The launch of ‘SCMP LIGHTHOUSE’ marks our commitment to helping our business and advertising partners understand our global audience so we can continue to deliver news and advertising content that adds value to our readers.”

To implement ‘SCMP LIGHTHOUSE’, the Post partnered with 1PlusX to help marketers and publishers unlock the full potential of SCMP’s rich data by extrapolating and aggregating information from various data pools and predicting behavioral trends and patterns from robust data processing and data modeling.

“The launch of SCMP LIGHTHOUSE marks an important milestone and I strongly believe marketers will substantially profit from the platform’s ability to portray transparent data insights supported by our predictive technology,’’ said Jürgen Galler, CEO at 1plusX. ““A whole spectrum of new audience capabilities can be generated and when applied holistically, the platform will enable SCMP to drive data intelligence in the future.

“The launch of SCMP LIGHTHOUSE highlights our dynamic and stimulating collaboration with the Post and we look forward to continue challenging the status quo in the international digital advertising space together.”

Kindly visit advertising.scmp.com and email rica.raubenheimer@scmp.com for more details about ‘SCMP LIGHTHOUSE’.

FACTSHEET: SCMP LIGHTHOUSE

What is SCMP LIGHTHOUSE?

SCMP LIGHTHOUSE is a proprietary in-house platform for marketers to create bespoke audiences on SCMP’s profiles, discover insights in real-time that is based on Post’s robust global readership. The platform utilises first-party data in a combination of declared data from polls and quizzes with observed onsite user behaviours, Google Analytics, ad-log data and other content analytics to go beyond interest and intent to measure engagement and make insights available for targeting and reporting.

What’s driving the need for first-party data?

Google announced in January 2020 that third-party cookies would be blocked in Chrome within two years, at which point they will be effectively useless for all use cases. Google, Apple, Firefox and Brave  have been clamping down on fingerprinting techniques and the upshot is that we all need to find a new digital currency for targeting and measurement.

How does SCMP provide value to marketers using first-party data?

As news publishers, SCMP has a relationship with our readers and knows its audience better than anyone else through its users’ first-party data. Understanding our users and creating a platform allows us and advertisers to recognise that value. The move towards a single-sign in and persistent ID also allows us to build editorial impact and deeper engagement with readers through a greater personalised experience. Through SCMP LIGHTHOUSE, the Post is able to demonstrate the value of its audience by giving access to insights on readers.

What are the benefits of building your own data platform?

The first thing you should enable is greater business efficiencies. Giving your whole business access to your consumer data in a privacy compliant self-service platform will enable your staff to react faster and with validated insight.

Because it’s curated insight, you create a consistent way of talking about your audience throughout the company and you are able to control access and measure usage, whilst contextualising each insight so it’s easy to interpret no matter the relative data competency of that user.

By building your own platform, you are able to take advantage of any unique data you may have access to (adding a USP for potential partnerships) and you’ll also be able to build out functionality in a modular way, responding quickly to market conditions and opportunities.

Lastly, but most importantly, you will be in control of the data quality and ensure that your product truly adds value for your partners and to your business decisions.

For more details about ‘SCMP LIGHTHOUSE’, please contact Rica Raubenheimer, Digital Product Manager at rica.raubenheimer@scmp.com.

SCMP launches Rebel City: the definitive story of Hong Kong’s year of unrest

HONG KONG, 1 June 2020 – The South China Morning Post (SCMP) and international academic publisher World Scientific announced today the launch of Rebel City: Hong Kong’s Year of Water and Fire—a new book that chronicles the political confrontation that has gripped the city since June 2019.

The anthology is a nuanced and in-depth account of the unprecedented turmoil and complex manoeuvrings that defined a summer of discontent, distilled from more than 5,000 news reports, analyses and commentaries from Hong Kong’s paper of record.

Rebel City is more than a collection of stories—it aims to profile the Hong Kong protests without fear or favour, underpinned by journalistic instincts that know every tale has multiple sides. It comprehensively outlines the city’s worst political crisis through a plurality of perspectives that goes beyond the perceived dichotomy of the people of Hong Kong versus its government.

This book is for anyone seeking to understand not just what Hong Kong has gone through but also the global phenomenon of increasingly leaderless protest movements. Edited by SCMP’s Deputy Executive Editor Zuraidah Ibrahim and Political Correspondent Jeffie Lam, the book draws on the work of journalists from the Post across Hong Kong, Beijing, Washington and Singapore—a team with unmatched access to all sides of the conflict.

Hong Kong was in retrospect ripe to be the laboratory for a new-age protest movement, fuelled by profound angst about the place of millennial youth in society, widening income inequality, and the speed of digital communications. The anti-extradition bill protests that morphed rapidly into a wider anti-government movement in 2019 left no aspect of the city untouched, from its social compact to its body politic to its open economy. Against the backdrop of the “one country, two systems” model and its growing ambiguities, SCMP’s reporting team took a contemplative look back at Hong Kong in Rebel City on its most wrenching political crisis since its return to Chinese rule in 1997.

“The book is a non-partisan account of the events of 2019 and a fact-based attempt to explain all the contradictions, nuances and complexities of the anti-government protest movement triggered by the ill-fated extradition bill. Rebel City encapsulates the blood, sweat and tears of a world city at a crossroads and is still impacted by those events today. I’m proud of what this book represents and our team’s contribution in covering one of the biggest social and political upheavals of our times,” said Tammy Tam, Editor-in-Chief, South China Morning Post.

“We are grateful to our newsmakers and sources on all sides of this complex story. The events of 2019 produced many conflicting narratives and shades of grey, and it was important to hear the voices of all who were impacted. No one has emerged from it unscathed. This book would not have been possible if they were not willing to share their perspectives so generously,” said Zuraidah.

“This insightful book provides a holistic array of differing perspectives during one of Hong Kong’s most turbulent times in recent history as the world witnessed the series of events unfold before its eyes. World Scientific is privileged to be a part of this book project that brings about first-hand accounts of different encounters from within the city,” said Mr Max Phua, Managing Director, World Scientific.

Rebel City retails for US$28 / £22 / S$28 / HKD$198 in paperback and US$68 / £60 / S$68 in hardback (before taxes, where applicable) at major bookstores, distributors and online. South China Morning Post commits to high standards and transparent journalism by joining the Trust Project

HONG KONG, 19 March 2020 – The South China Morning Post is the first news organisation in Asia to join the Trust Project, a consortium of the world’s top media companies committed to the highest standards of journalistic quality, transparency and credibility.

The Trust Project is a global network of major news outlets working to affirm and amplify journalism’s commitment to transparency, accuracy and inclusion. It includes BBC, the Washington Post, and the Economist. Please visit thetrustproject.org for more details.

This commitment underlines the SCMP’s dedication to press freedom and quality journalism and reinforces its continued mission to lead the global conversation on China with trustworthy, comprehensive reporting from its unique vantage point in Hong Kong.

“The South China Morning Post believes a commitment to transparency is foundational to journalistic excellence, which is why today we are pleased to join the Trust Project,” said SCMP CEO Gary Liu. “This is just the latest step in our drive to earn our readers’ trust through transparent practices, and we hope that other news organisations in the region will join us in implementing clear policies to bolster the freedom of the press.”

It joins 32 other reliable news sites run by seven news organizations that have committed to the rigorous standards and disclosures of the Trust Project.  Approved news sites with the Trust Project show who and what is behind a news story, enabling readers to make informed decisions about what to read and share. The incoming news partners extend the Trust Indicators’ reach to more than 200 news sites and hundreds of millions of people a month.

“For more than a century, our newsroom has been dedicated to covering the issues and implications on the latest developments in China and Hong Kong that impact global trends,”  said Tammy Tam, Editor-in-Chief, SCMP. “Especially in this global coronavirus pandemic, what the world needs now is swift and objective coverage from credible news sources and focus on transparency and education to prevent overreaction and panic. The Trust Project provides transparent standards of our news production to help readers around the world who come to us for quality, trustworthy journalism.”

The SCMP has implemented transparent newsroom policies that adhere to the consortium’s Trust Indicators, including policies on ethics, corrections, fact-checking and sourcing. These Trust Indicators featured on its pages aim to provide readers with insight into the methodology of SCMP’s journalism as an authentic, reliable, and balanced news source.

“We are proud of the hard work and commitment to the public shown by the South China Morning Post,” said Sally Lehrman, founder and chief executive of the Trust Project. “As the Trust Project expands and more news sites adopt the Trust Indicators, now a globally accepted standard, we can slow the spread of false and misleading news and amplify the valuable journalism produced by reputable news organizations across the world.”

The March 2020 launch includes major international, regional, local and independent organizations. In addition to South China Morning Post, sites joining the Trust Project include Spanish current affairs magazine Cambio 16, FRONTLINE, the flagship investigative documentary series of the Public Broadcasting Service, The National Observer and CTV News, which extend the Trust Indicators to every province in Canada and The Southern California News Group and the Denver Post in the U.S.A.
