SCMP Launches Inaugural ‘Asia Matters’ Campaign in Singapore

SINGAPORE, 25 June 2019 – The South China Morning Post hosted its first ‘Asia Matters’ event in Singapore today, offering the business community an in-depth look at key issues shaping a region characterised by extreme diversity and immense growth potential.

With perspectives from leading corporate organisations, the event discussed major trends impacting Asia in the panel discussion, “Navigating the complexities of the Asian consumer market”. The session featured representatives from Netflix, Procter & Gamble, Grab and the Singapore’s Economic Development Board who shared insights on how they established a regional business footprint with an audience that comprised corporate leaders, investors, government officials and marketing experts.

The ‘Asia Matters’ campaign also underlined the growing urgency for global citizens to be well-informed with news, analysis and a plurality of views to help navigate through times of disruptive forces and constant change – a vital role SCMP has been playing as a trustworthy media brand with strong Asian expertise and robust international perspectives throughout its 115-year history.

At the event, SCMP also showcased its journey from a local newspaper to a global media company that now serves a wide international community. Asia now forms 40% of the Post’s global readership, followed by the USA as its fastest growing market (30%), and the rest of the world (30%).

“SCMP has a unique role in championing the importance of Asia as a region through our breadth and depth of news coverage. As a global media company based in the heart of Asia, our goal is to inform and elevate our world-wide community of readers. Events like ‘Asia Matters’ are important for coalescing the insights of leaders, and as a platform for meaningful discourse,” said Gary Liu, SCMP’s Chief Executive Officer.

Attendees at the event were also treated to a fire-side chat with SCMP Deputy Executive Editor Zuraidah Ibrahim, who shared the inner workings of the editorial team and how they maintain the paper’s high standards for independent journalism. Another key highlight of the event was learning from SCMP’s dedicated branded content team, Morning Studio, which is leading the evolution of marketing in the region by strategically connecting advertisers with readers through enhanced content solutions offerings for brands seeking a global audience. The team showcased its efforts via interactive and intimate dialogue sessions as well as an immaculate display of their past work.

HONG KONG, 21 February 2019 – Attendees of the China Conference took valuable insights from the event today. The speaker faculty, led by Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam and an exclusive line-up of experts and industry voices, shed light on what lies ahead for the Greater Bay Area and China in the next 40 years.

Lam set the tone in her opening address, outlining China’s growth ambitions and highlighting Hong Kong’s role in the Greater Bay Area initiative. Hong Kong will benefit by adopting open policies to promote global economic growth and investment in social issues such as education, medical care and employment development, according to Lam.

“China will not stop its effort to pursue higher-quality opening-up. China will not stop its effort to pursue an open world economy. And China will not stop its effort to pursue a community with a shared future for mankind. With our unique strengths under “One Country, Two Systems”, I have every confidence that Hong Kong will continue to benefit and contribute, especially in the context of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative,” Lam stated.

The conference convened over 380 corporate leaders and policymakers at Hong Kong’s JW Marriott Hotel, for action-oriented discussions which featured JPMorgan Chase & Co’s Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Asia Pacific Jing Ulrich; Dr Victor Fung, Group Chairman of Fung Group; Chairman, Hang Lung Properties Ltd Ronnie C. Chan; Chairman, Kerry Logistics Network George Yeo; Managing Director and Chief Economist Dr Shen Ming-gao of the Guangfa Securities Group, among others. Kindly click here for the full list of speakers and moderators.

Said Tammy Tam, SCMP’s Editor-in-Chief: “The Greater Bay Area is an opportunity to make a mark on the international stage, and for Hong Kong to showcase its ability to create an economy that encourages technological innovation and management. The China Conference aims to identify major socio-political and cultural trends, as well as business and investment issues across industries. These conferences help to foster engagement and open conversations about China and its global impact.”

China and Southeast Asia: Building Cooperation, Managing Complexities – SCMP hosts flagship China Conference in Kuala Lumpur

11 October, 2018 Kuala Lumpur — From 10-11 October, South China Morning Post brought together business leaders, government officials and leading experts at its China Conference in Kuala Lumpur to examine important issues for the region.

The two-day conference welcomed over 1,000 corporate leaders and policymakers, and over 65 prominent speakers from China, Southeast Asia and beyond, for a frank and forward-looking series of discussions about how to create mutually beneficial policies. A series of high-level keynote speeches provided government perspectives, while break-out sessions delved into business and investment opportunities in the infrastructure, finance, and tech sectors. Topics discussed ranged from AI’s influence to SEA business, the BRI ‘debt trap’, Islamic financing, cashless payments and many more.

With concerns rising over its trade war with the US, China appears to be strengthening its relationships throughout southeast Asia. The world’s second largest economy has become a key partner for Southeast Asia in trade, investment, and infrastructure development. Ties are poised to grow even stronger in the coming decade, as China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and growing economy promise to have major implications for Asia.

In his opening remarks, Gary Liu, CEO, SCMP stressed that, “China can’t be truly examined without looking at Southeast Asia. Holding the China Conference in Kuala Lumpur reflects the central importance of Malaysia and the rise of ASEAN.”

While in discussion on economic ties between the two sides, C Y Leung, Vice Chairman, National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, said, Economic integration or globalisation may have been put in reverse gear, and no vehicle in reverse gear can go far or fast. Protectionism for whatever purpose is misguided and will be short lived. Integration offers a better economic future.” .

Jack Ma, co-founder of the Alibaba Group, joined the conference via live-video stating that “Entrepreneurs should have long-term vision, patience, and a willingness to learn. If you’re not optimistic, don’t be an entrepreneur.”

On building a stronger and sustainable tech ecosystem in the region, Quek Siu Rui, Co-founder and CEO of Carousell shared his thoughts, “There isn’t enough tech talent in the region. We need to have passionate, young, hungry people with huge potential, but you (also) need a few bar raisers to show them this is how you build… that balance of contributing to and developing that ecosystem.”

“We are at the most uncertain and risky moment in U.S. China relations in perhaps 30 years,” said Michael Crowley, Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent for POLITICO who was also the moderator for the panel discussion – Towards Safer Regional Security. “As a trade war emerges and top U.S. officials call for a stronger strategic response to China, it is crucial to have public conversations like the one SCMP hosted about potential economic and security consequences.”

Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Minister of Economic Affairs, Malaysia, closed the two-day conference by saying, “China’s commitment to peaceful development is absolutely crucial for the continued prosperity of the region. The region must remain a zone of peace, freedom and neutrality and must not be allowed to be militarised.”

Key Speakers included:

  • Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Minister of Economic Affairs, Malaysia
  • Hon. C Y Leung, Vice Chairman, National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference;
  • Yang Berhormat Datuk Norazman Bin Ayob, Deputy Secretary-General, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Malaysia

Back in the 1900s, it was the location of Hong Kong Electric’s power plant in Wan Chai. Today, the precinct has evolved into an emerging dining area with strong artistic overtones, thanks to a group of creative talents, designers and free-thinking restaurateurs who have filled the area with cafes, restaurants, bars, galleries, florists and home design outlets. Together with a thoughtfully landscaped environment and a Three Pacific Place Link connecting the precinct to the rest of the Pacific Place complex, these shops have turned the area into a Hong Kong lifestyle community.
