Presenting the all-new Style by SCMP: Discerning and Intelligent Luxury

Hong Kong, (April 14, 2023) – The South China Morning Post is pleased to present the all-new Style by SCMP, a rebrand of its flagship Style publication known for curated and insightful global luxury and lifestyle content through an Asian lens.

Style by SCMP hails the advent of an inclusive luxury experience that values knowledge, access and connectivity, a dynamic perspective that moves away from purely symbolic representations of exclusivity and wealth, marking a new era of South China Morning Post’s role in the conversation on discerning and intelligent luxury. The revamped Style by SCMP weaves responsible luxury, entrepreneurship, innovation, women leadership, wellness and philanthropy topics into its coverage on latest trends in fashion, watches and jewellery.

“The slanted letter ‘l’ is evocative of the slash (/), which is prevalent across the creative community. This places the brand’s stake in a multi-hyphenate-driven milieu, and highlights the versatility of roles and viewpoints which make up today’s luxury market,” says Vincenzo La Torre, Chief Editor, Style by SCMP, South China Morning Post.

“The South China Morning Post is dedicated to nurturing communities that bring together brands and influencers who are united by their pursuit of knowledge, wellbeing, betterment and fulfilment, where the affluent and influential can be the heroes and heroines of their own stories,” adds Kevin Huang, Chief Operating Officer, South China Morning Post.

NOTE TO READERS AND EDITORS

Style by SCMP publishes 10 issues per year and is distributed with the South China Morning Post, counting luxury hotels, hair salons, wellness spas and airport lounges amongst its key distribution locations.

SCMP partners with the Google News Initiative to build a reader-first, content recommendation engine

Hong Kong, (12 January 2023) – The South China Morning Post (SCMP) launched “Project Hercules” in partnership with the Google News Institute in 2021, a collaborative initiative to build an improved content recommendation engine for the benefit of readers.

Project Hercules enabled the dynamic creation of reader segments based on demographic, psychographic and behavioural data signals, based on which content recommendations were deployed algorithmically. The founding goals of the project were to build a mechanism to increase user engagement and ultimately conversion to paid subscriptions, both of which were realised over the course of the partnership.

With the support of Google, which provided project oversight and funding while facilitating GCP and offering recommendations on AI best practices, SCMP engineered and coded the recommendation engine sitting at the heart of Project Hercules. Both parties worked together to deploy AI ethics and principles when scaling the project scope to ensure optimal impact by ensuring diversity of data in sampling and disrupting echo chamber formulations.

Learn more about SCMP’s findings from “Project Hercules” here.

“The success of Project Hercules and the learnings derived really tells us that it is possible to build and scale an inclusive and engaging form of responsible journalism for readers that is both data-driven and people-oriented.” Vhanya Barba Mackechnie, Vice President, Product, SCMP notes.

“Echoing SCMP’s vision to ‘Elevate Thought’, our audience will only continue to hold us to higher editorial and content standards as their awareness and knowledge of news affairs grows in parallel with our mission to serve their reading needs.” Shea Driscoll, Digital Editor, SCMP observes. “Access to quality content builds trust and confidence, empowering our audience to see us as their preferred and premier news source as they recognize our ability to educate, inform and engage them on topics close to their hearts.”

As previously announced, Liu will transition into a new role to oversee the development of Artifact Labs, a new blockchain and NFT company created by SCMP.

So’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Post which will benefit from her extensive media and technology leadership experience, strong track record for corporate transformation and innovation, and success in growing consumer-focused companies. Her background in digitalisation, audience development, and content commercialization make her an ideal leader to oversee SCMP’s next stage of audience and subscriber growth.

“We are thrilled to have Catherine as our next CEO. She brings exceptional leadership acumen to the company, and she will drive continued business growth with a deep focus on editorial excellence and user experience,” said Joe Tsai, Chairman of the SCMP Board of Directors.

“We also thank Gary for his dedication and contributions over five-and-a-half years as CEO. He has created a lasting legacy by transforming the Post digitally and culturally, and has empowered the company to further innovate with purpose and passion.”

So joins SCMP from Expedia Group where she was Managing Director of Asia Pacific overseeing its consumer brands in all APAC markets. She was Managing Director of Groupon Hong Kong, and has previously held leadership positions at iProperty Group (now REA Group), Tom Group, News Corporation, and AOL Time Warner.

Said So, “I am honoured to take on this position and thrilled to lead the South China Morning Post. The need for quality journalism has never been higher in today’s complex and polarised world. As a trusted news media company in Hong Kong and around the world, the Post is well-positioned to shape the global dialogue on Greater China and Asia.”

“Building on SCMP’s world-class editorial, I will focus on strengthening business fundamentals: growing our global readership base, and expanding commercial opportunities, through both product and technological innovations. I look forward to leading and working with the team to achieve the next phase of transformation and growth at SCMP.”

Said Liu, “SCMP is in great hands with Catherine as our next CEO. The Post will benefit from her deep digital and commercial expertise and her leadership experience. I look forward to SCMP’s continued growth under Catherine’s stewardship.”
