Post draws attention with five awards

HONG KONG, February 22, 2013 – The South China Morning Post has won five awards from the world’s most prestigious newspaper design association for its graphic designs and photographs published last year.

The US-based, 1,500-member strong Society for News Design judged the paper’s design as among the world’s best in its 34th annual Best of Newspaper Design competition.

The Post’s senior graphics designer Adolfo Arranz was the biggest winner with three awards in the Features Information Graphics category. He was honoured with a silver award for a graphic on wine tasting that was published on May 26. It was the first time anyone from the Post has been honoured with a silver award in the competition.

Arranz also received two Awards of Excellence for feature design pages for work on the Tour de France and the ancient Olympic Games, published on June 30 and July 25 respectively.

The Post’s former graphics director Simon Scarr was honoured with an Award of Excellence for News Pages Design for a graphical presentation of retail statistics over the city’s pre-Christmas shopping rush, published on November 29.

They shared the limelight with the Post’s photography team, which scooped an Award of Excellence in the category of Photography/Multiple Photos Project page or spread. The photography team was led by Yves Sieur.

The Post’s editor-in-chief, Wang Xiangwei, said: “We are delighted to have won these awards in a truly international competition. They recognise not only the outstanding talent we have at the Post but also our long-standing commitment to excellence in design, photography and innovative infographics.”

“It’s a tradition we will continue to build upon in the years ahead,” Wang said.

Last year, the Post won nine awards in the annual competition which attracts entries from general circulation newspapers from around the world and honours design, graphics and photography.

The society holds several competitions in a year focused on the best work in visual communication – whether print or multimedia, professional or student-produced.
